I´m getting a compile error with 2.6.15.5 on x86_64 using GCC 3.4.4
(does not seem to be related to the NFS one):
CC mm/mempolicy.o
mm/mempolicy.c: In function `get_nodes':
mm/mempolicy.c:527: error: `BITS_PER_BYTE' undeclared (first use in
this function)
mm/mempolicy.c:527: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only
once
mm/mempolicy.c:527: error: for each function it appears in.)
It works fine on x86 machines.

Try the following (untested patch).

Thanks for your reply, but this patch does not solve the problem (same
error message). I´ve appended my .config in case that might help.

Hmm, types.h contains the
#define BITS_PER_BYTE 8
that mmpolicy.c needs, so including that header should do the trick... odd..
I'll look at the code a bit more.

There is no BITS_PER_BYTE in include/types.h. I´ve grepped through the
kernel source (2.6.15 and 2.6.15.5) and found that BITS_PER_BYTE is
defined only in arch/i386/mach-voyager/voyager_cat.c

This patch solves the problem! :-) I have not yet rebooted the machine
(it´s a busy webserver), but in case I do not reply again within one day
you can assume that it works fine. Thank you very much!

Thank you for the feedback.
Andi, Christoph : would this make sense as a fix for -stable ?
How about mainline ?
Fix build error in mm/mempolicy.c due to missing `BITS_PER_BYTE'.

It's already fixed in stable.

mainline never had this problem. The backport was just bad.

Hmm, ok, so it's in the queue for 2.6.15.6 (since it obviously isn't
in current 2.6.15.5 -stable as that's where Steffen hit it), that's
good.

Hmm, I see that at least two things from the patch seems to be
aplicable to at least current -mm (haven't checked latest Linus -git
yet).
The bit that removes BITS_PER_BYTE from
arch/i386/mach-voyager/voyager_cat.c and the bit that removes the
duplicate #include <linux/mempolicy.h> and substitutes it with
#include <linux/types.h> those bits would seem to apply to
2.6.16-rc5-mm1
include/linux/types.h already has the BITSPER_BYTE define in -mm.

Its already in 2.6.16-rc.
christoph@schroedinger:~/software/linux$ grep BITS_PER_BYTE */include/linux/*
linux-2.6.16-rc2/include/linux/types.h:#define BITS_PER_BYTE 8
linux-2.6.16-rc3/include/linux/types.h:#define BITS_PER_BYTE 8
linux-2.6.16-rc4/include/linux/types.h:#define BITS_PER_BYTE 8
linux-2.6.16-rc5/include/linux/types.h:#define BITS_PER_BYTE 8
(dont have rc1 and 15 in that directory)
