- It seems to compile.

Boilerplate:

- See the `hot-fixes' directory for any important updates to this patchset.

- To fetch an -mm tree using git, use (for example)

  git fetch git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/smurf/linux-trees.git v2.6.16-rc2-mm1

- -mm kernel commit activity can be reviewed by subscribing to the
  mm-commits mailing list.

        echo "subscribe mm-commits" | mail majordomo@vger.kernel.org

- If you hit a bug in -mm and it's not obvious which patch caused it, it is
most valuable if you can perform a bisection search to identify which patch
introduced the bug. Instructions for this process are at

        http://www.zip.com.au/~akpm/linux/patches/stuff/bisecting-mm-trees.txt

But beware that this process takes some time (around ten rebuilds and
reboots), so consider reporting the bug first and if we cannot immediately
identify the faulty patch, then perform the bisection search.

- When reporting bugs, please try to Cc: the relevant maintainer and mailing
  list on any email.

Hi Andrew,

The SND_SEQUENCER_OSS config option in sound/core/Kconfig claims it could be
compiled as a module despite being a bool. This patch removes the misleading
help text. This should apply to 2.6.16 as well, should I resend a patch?

Regards,
Frederik

I often consult Con when I can't find my australian dictionary - I assume
this means you think this release is unstable and that all you can say is
that it compiles?

In the interest of our multicultural audience, it might make sense to not
assume intimate knowledge of such advanced concepts as irony,
understatements etc.

Not that I don't appreciate it :-) But still.

the argumentation is wrong. the previous code beein inline made drivers
using it even more of a derived work than a _GPL export.

Well, depends :)

Ran into this on -mm1 also. Haven't digged into finding out why ?

  LD init/built-in.o
  LD .tmp_vmlinux1
arch/x86_64/mm/built-in.o(.init.text+0x1298): In function `__change_page_attr':
arch/x86_64/mm/pageattr.c:58: undefined reference to `srat_reserve_add_area'
make: *** [.tmp_vmlinux1] Error 1

Ideas ?

Thanks,
Badari

Yes, that'll happen. I guess you'll need to set CONFIG_ACPI_NUMA for now.

Fixed.

(I could have sworn i added that ifdef earlier already, weird)

Thanks. Setting CONFIG_X86_64_ACPI_NUMA=y solved my problem.

I carry around known-to-work .config file for each machine and don't
bother selecting new config options :(

You shouldn't take it that way. My full message to Andrew for public
record was as follows

--

Based on Linus original comments about _GPL we should export
tty_insert_flip_char as EXPORT_SYMBOL because it used to be
EXPORT_SYMBOL equivalent (trivial inline). The other features are new
extensions are were not available to drivers before so need not be
provided except as _GPL functionality as far as I can see.

None of the above should be taken as permission directly, indirectly or
by means such as estoppel of the waving of GPL rights and me giving
permission for non-GPL code to use any of my GPL code if it is in any
way derivative of my work of course.

--

So if its derivative then so be it.

Alan

We know why, it's a kconfig oddity - as discussed in the 2.6.16-mm1
thread.

But... it can be compiled as a module - I'm using it right now.

$ lsmod | grep ^snd_seq_oss
snd_seq_oss 31396 0

The help test is misleading, but partly true.

It is not possible to choose M here, but the OSS sequencer will be a
module when the ALSA sequencer (CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER) is a module.

The text itself is thus a tristate: "true, false, partly true" :)

Please fix the module name to snd-seq-oss ?

Otherwise it looks fine.

I've just upgraded from an i386 to an x86_64. It was an.... ordeal, but the
kernel was the least of the worries. Userland upgrades were a pain.

Using the same config as on i386 apart from the differences that a 'make
oldconfig' threw up on the new architecture, I am now seeing some problems with
the x86_64 that I was not seeing on i386 on this release.

Kernel messages like this when booting up:

They're not appearing all the time, so far mainly at boot time.

I've posted the full dmesg and config up at http://www.reub.net/files/kernel/

As this is the first release I've run on x86_64 I can't say how long this one
has been showing up for ;)

I don't know why the messages are mangled - it looks like there's some
problem with serial console (might be x86_64-specific).

But the messages you're seeing are due to some debug code, sorry - they
didn't happen on my test box. You'll need to change report_lost_ticks
(arch/x86_64/kernel/time.c, line 66) to zero.

If this "likely" case becomes reality at any time in the future,
reverting my patch will be trivial.

OTOH, I have seen too many cases where people have said "I will need
this soon", and one year later it was still unused.
