I have a multimedia keyboard with some keys not mapped in linux, which
i intend to create mappings for. When i connect it to serio0, those
unknown keys trigger messages on the console about it, but when its
conncted to a usb port, nothing gets printed, and Ive even set console
loglevel to 8. What am i missing?

Just discovered it needs usb debugging to be set. But isnt
inconsistent the fact that the atkbd driver does this differently from
the usbkbd driver? If its a good idea to print those messages by
default or one, why its not for the other?

usbkbd will only report standard keys and is supposed in limited
circumstances so it complaining about unknown keys is not very useful.
Why do you need it? Doesn't hid driver work for you?

It works, except that i have some multimedia keys which are not
mapped. Im going to add those to the table soon, thats why i needed
those messages. So you think the usbkbd behaviour is the correct one,
and the default behaviour must be changed in the atkbd driver?

Please change #undef DEBUG to #define DEBUG in
drivers/usb/input/hid-input.c and send me dmesg - we want to map those
key in HID driver if we can.

No, not really. atkbd is a recommended (and only) driver when
connecting PS/2 keyboards. We do want user to know how to set up
additional keys, if any. usbkbd driver is only to be used when there
are issues with full HID driver. It will only provide "standard" keys
and is not expected to be modified.

Did that. keyboard in question here is a Microsoft Wireless Comfort
Keyboard 1.0A + Wireless Optical Mouse 2.0. they share the same
receiver, and it supports low battery and weak signal status for both
the mouse and the keyboard. Here is the output of those debug messages

This name microsoft wireless optical desktop is the same name that is
written under the receiver, except that the version mentioned is 3.0A,
not 2.20

Hope im not putting too much information in just one email, but there
is a weird issue with t he mouse. It registers a joystick interface as
well, that has so many buttons and axes that it segfaults all the
programs i know that report joystick events:

The only program i can use to watch the events is mplayer. There i can
see for example that pressing the left right and middle mouse buttons
also generates some joystick events, button presses to be more exact.
This mouse also has side scrolls, which doesnt generate any events.

This joystick interface behaves so badly and seems useless, it only
causes problems at the moment, so i would rather have it blacklisted.

Hi, i worked on this problem a little bit more today, the following
patch makes jstest usable for me:

Now i can see it reports a joystick device of 37 axes and 12 buttons.
Ive played with it for a while and the only events i can trigger are
button 7 8 and 9, for left right and middle mouse button respectively.
All the others dont seem to change.

The joystick in question is ofcourse js0, which is registered together
with the mouse.

So, is this hid-input's fault for registering my mouse as a joystick,
my mouse for reporting its a joystick device, or something else?
If its my mouse's fault, is it possible to blacklist it, and use some
kind of quirk to fix this?

Hi, i started this thread a long time ago and still got no definitive
response for it. Whats the position of you guys? Is it an issue worth
a fix in mainline at all?

My opinion is that usbkbd serves as:

	a) an example usb/input driver
	b) for embedded systems where usbhid is too large

For keyboards with extra keys, use usb-hid.

Sorry, weve came to that conclusion, the thread got to somethign else
entirely different. ill summarize here my problem so that you dont
need to read it all over again.

1) I have a microsoft multimedia keyboard, and the hid driver doesnt
maps all the multimedia keys. The output of the hid debug output was
posted previously in the thread.
2) For some reason, th hid driver register lots of absolute axis and
joystick buttons that dont seem to work at all, no matter what i
press. I Asked if it would be possible to blacklist those. Currently
the device registers a js interface with so many axis and buttons that
some programs even segfault while reading it. This interface is
useless as far as i can see.
If you need more detailed information please ask me.

Maybe the thread subject should be changed to something more
apropriate, do so if it pleases you.

Just point me to the HID debug logs. (I need DEBUG enabled in both
hid-core.c and hid-input.c.) Make sure you're running an uptodate
kernel. I'll see what is needed to fix the mappings for that keyboard.

It seems to be missing something at the top, also the whitespace
formatting seems to be discarded - everything is aligned to the first
column, making it rather hard to read. Please retry using 'dmesg -s 131072'.

Ok, fixed it, using dmesg now (had to increase the printk shift so it
wouldnt throw things out)

Yes, this one looks much better.

The keyboard part of the device is OK, but the multimedia/mouse part is
totally FUBAR. Adding support for any keys that are not making it
through should be trivial, but making it not appear as a crazy joystick
is not realistically possible: The device insists on that it IS a device
from hell with almost all possible valuators defined in the HID spec.

Yes, its totally crap, should have know better before buying it : /
But isnt it possible to create a blacklist for it, so the hid driver
would ignore those valuators?
Thats what devices with broken implementations deserve : )

A better option would be to provide an alternate (corrected) HID
descriptor for it. We already patch the HID descriptor of one keyboard,
so maybe to have generic descriptor replacement support in hid-core
would make sense.
