There is now a realtime Linux wiki available here:
http://rt.wiki.kernel.org
The goal is to provide a place for folks interested in realtime Linux to learn
more, and for those working on or with realtime Linux to share their code,
tests, and experiences.
The site is pretty bare-bones at the moment. We are looking to add relevant
articles, howtos, test-cases, etc. So please take a moment, browse through
what is currently there, and provide some feedback as to layout and content,
including new content you would like to see added.
We apparently need a logo, so if any of you are artistically inclined, please
feel free to propose one :-)
Darren Hart <dvhltc@us.ibm.com> and Ted Ts'o <theotso@us.ibm.com> are the
current site administrators, please CC them on any webmaster related mail.

Looks good! This is interesting timing. CELF is in the process of
putting together an Embedded Linux Wiki, and one of the sections
was going to be realtime. However, with this announcement, I think
we need to re-think at least that part of our planned site.
Quite possibly we should throw our efforts towards this
(at least for kernel-oriented realtime info). BTW, we also plan
to use MediaWiki, so that much would be consistent with your site.
Our site is intended to cover more than just the kernel,
so I didn't really approach the kernel.org owners for a sub-domain,
but your use of a sub-domain of wiki.kernel.org is very interesting.
I didn't know such things were available.
Do you think other sub-domains of wiki.kernel.org will be made
available for other kernel areas? If so, what are the terms
of use? We haven't chosen our domain name yet, so we
still have some flexibility if there are other options open

Yep, that was part of the design. When I approached Peter Anvin and
the other kernel.org maintainers during OLS about hosting the -rt wiki
on kernel.org infrastructure, what we explicitly talked about was
making it easy to set up other wiki's for multiple kernel projects,
just like kernel.org hosts multiple mailing lists beyond just the
LKML.
If we get too many wiki's, or the wiki's get too much traffic, we may
need to hit up some corporate sponsors to update the hardware which is
driving the *.wiki.kernel.org domain, but I suspect that won't be
terribly difficult. Both the real-time wiki and the embedded wiki
would benefit and are of interest to a large number of companies, and
I'm sure we wouldn't have too much difficulty hitting them up for
money for hardware upgrades. :-)

In case people try it, and get confused, at the moment you can go to:
http://any-key-word.wiki.kernel.org
... and you will be pointed at a wiki. At the moment, the only wiki
that exists is the rt wiki and the default wiki (Demeter of
kernel.org). So if you enter http://embedded.wiki.kernel.org, you
will currently go to the default wiki, which is a little confusing
because there currently isn't any text explaining that this is what is
going on. And, the default wiki isn't set up to allow anyone to login
or to modify its pages --- for the obvious reason that we didn't want
it to become filled with link spam.
The host demeter.kernel.org is set up to support multiple wiki's,
based on the hostname in the *.wiki.kernel.org domain, but you have to
talk to the administrators of the *.wiki.kernel.org to actually enable
a new specific wiki. This isn't hard for them, as it's just creating
a new database and adding a few lines in a PHP file, but it does
require some minor amounts of administrative work.
I suspect the main issue is for anyone contemplating setting up a new
wiki at *.wiki.kernel.org is that you'll need to find at least 2 or 3
Wiki editors who have the time to set up the wiki and keep it
administered and groomed. Don't underestimate the amount of work
needed to keep a wiki to be healthy and up to date; it requires active
maintenance.
Darren Hart and I have been doing this for the -rt wiki (and many
thanks to Darren, as he's done a huge amount of Yeoman's work in
getting content up on the site, organizing it, and tweaking the
formatting, as well as to Melissa McKenney for providing the logo
artwork for the site), and we can tell you that it's not a trivial
amount of work. (Although, it can be a great way to relieve stress
between programming sessions and budget meetings. :-)

menus, like http://kernelnewbies.org/ and http://linux-mm.org/
Too many of the wikis out there become horrendously hard to
navigate after a few years...

Actually, you can edit the Navigation menu by editing
Mediawiki:Sidebar magic page. There are other things that you can
edit in the Mediawiki:* namespace that affect the Wiki's overall
navigation.
Only the Wiki sysops are allowed to edit the Mediawiki:* namespace,
though, because of the fact that they affect the core behavior of the
wiki, and because some of the Mediawiki:* pages use raw html, and so
there are some cross-scripting security holes that could be a problem
if you allowed random users to be able to edit them.

Agreed, which is why you need to have wiki editors keeping track of
whether the important pages are available either on the main page or
within two clicks of the main page.

Thanks for the heads up,
Demeter (the machine running the wiki) has been having some problems
that we aren't sure of. I will get ahold of the colo-provider (OSUOSL)
and have them reboot the machine and I'll take a look at it when it
comes back up. I'll keep you guys informed on what I find.
