Trying that patch is the next thing on my plate.  For now, here's the
dmesg output James requested (aha1542 debug patch).  Oddly enough, when
the smoke cleared, the mount succeeded and I could access the cd :-).

Initial state: SCSI cdrom drivers not loaded.
