usb-uhci loaded.
[2.] Full description of the problem/report: On my MacBook (first
generation Core Duo 1.83GHz), I can hear a faint whining noise that
becomes audible when usb-uhci is loaded and remains audible except
when the USB ports are in use ( i.e. the noise temporarily stops when
I'm copying music to my iPod). This problem occurs on both 2.6.21
and 2.6.22-rc7, but does not occur on 2.6.18. Unloading usb-uhci when
booted in 2.6.22-rc7 makes the whining noise stop, but the system is
useless in this state for obvious reasons.

This sounds like a known problem w/ some laptops. Maybe powersupply,
noisy onboard conductors at 1000Hz, entering processor P-states and
I've heard about it in context with USB too, IIRC....
As you have tickless timer enabled, CONFIG_HZ shouldn't trigger it, but
you can check this with '$ vmstat 1' and watch the in(terrupts) field.
They should be quite low.
To disable P-states follow the instructions on the link below.
As you have set CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND and it's noisy only when nothing
is connected, unsetting it might be worth a try. But, AFAIK, 2.6.18
already had this feature?

I assume you mean uhci-hcd. usb-uhci is part of Linux 2.4, not 2.6.

You have a USB keyboard, right? So the ports are always in use --
unless you unplug the keyboard.

I don't know what's causing the noise. Maybe something operating at
the UHCI controller's 1000-Hz frame rate is coupling to a speaker
connection.
Anyway it's clearly a hardware problem, even if it is triggered by
something in software. About all I can suggest is to surround the
MacBook with something sound-absorbent. (Not very helpful, I agree.)

I have a similar problem with my new Thinkpad X60 Tablet. In this case,
I have a high pitched whine which is only caused when USB drivers are loaded,
I am on battery, and there are no devices connected to USB. I suspect
something involved with CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND (which is enabled) is causing this
whine, but I haven't dug deeper to find out a more precise cause.
For reference, I'm running Fedora 7's 2.6.21-1.3228.fc7 x86_64.

After reading the ThinkPad wiki link, I've found that the problem has
to do with the C3 and C4 ACPI states. I'm guessing that the 2.6.18
kernel I was using on Debian Etch just happened to not support full
power management on my MacBook - hence, the problem didn't occur.
Sorry for all of this - I guess I'll pass this info on to Apple and
see if they may be able to fix this with a firmware update (it occurs
on OS X too).

The most likely source of a noise as you seem to describe is a
ceramic capacitor. An alternative is some coil, but that you
usually only hear in cases where a high frequency is used inside
a voltage convertor (in order to reduce transformator or coil
sizes) and I doubt that anything like that is possible in a
laptop... I'd have the hear the actual sound to know what it is.
99% chance it's a ceramic capacitor that has to absorb some
pulsed current.
If you'd replace the capacitor with another one of a different
type (same capacity, of course), for example a styroflex one,
then the noise would go away. It's very difficult to find out
which it is however ;). The only method that I know is by
touching each capacitor (ie with pliers) while it is making noise,
which will cause the sound to change a little if you have the
right one.

Yeah, that looks like the reason behind almost all noises a thinkpad makes
(there are very few reports of noise making it to the audio signal, most of
them really are from the board components).

High frequencies are tricky, and they have the nasty side-effect of wearing
down solder joints with time if the joints are not very perfect to begin
with (which IS something to be worried about in ThinkPads, there are
documented issues with bad soldering breaking thinkpads after a few years of
use). And they can be very difficult to dampen.
Would some sealing non-conductive, non-acid glue work? Maybe clear epoxy
glue, like the one Microsoft uses in the Xbox to protect against
modchipping? Or would the high frequency just travel down the solders (and
glue!) to the board, and continue doing its damage and annoying noise?
Replacing SMD components in the thinkpad system board ain't even remotely
easy to do if one needs to change to another type of capacitor...
