  I had the same problem back in the 2.6.16 to 2.6.20 days (no dynticks).
The only solution I found was to get rid of gnome. Since then I've been
happily running with xfce.

  Yep, try to get rid of gnome, if you don't see the problem anymore then
complain to the gnome developers.
