Add the ability to dynamically enable/disable pr_debug()/dev_dbg() in the
kernel. Yes, these calls could be converted to printk(KERN_DEBUG), but there
are enough to cause overhead. Additionally, the logs become difficult to read.
Here, one can turn on and off these messages per .c source file via:
echo "add file.c" > /sys/kernel/debug/dynamic_printk/files
echo "remove file.c" > /sys/kernel/debug/dynamic_printk/files
There is also a special 'all' value that turns on all the debugging messages.

Is <filename> the full path name or just the basename of the file?
If just the basename, what happens for files that have duplicated
basenames throughout the kernel tree?

agreed. i think 'KBUILD_MODNAME" provides a better interface. The original
implementation was using complete source pathnames, so they were unique. Are
'KBUILD_MODNAME's unique?
I was also thinking of expanding this beyond just 'printk'. ie add the ability
to not only dynamically get printk output, but also tying more general
statistics and debugging infrastructure into this. For example,
CONFIG_SCHEDSTATS, can cause a runtime overhead. However, if we prefaced, the
calls with: if (unlikely(immediate_value)), we could drastically reduce the off
case. We might also need special cleanup and initialization functions, but I
could try and see what the code would look like.

Yes, not by file, but by groups of compilation units
that make up a module. I think that's more sensible anyway.
I also have patches to pr_<level> that allow for dynamic
prefixing of KBUILD_MODNAME, __FUNCTION__, and __LINE__
that might be a useful addition to a facility such as yours.
These patches also make the kernel smaller by removing the
direct uses of __FILE__/__FUNCTION__/__func__ from pr_<level>.
I intend to post them during the next merge window.

hi,
ok, here is a re-spun patch incorporating comments from the thread.
Although this patch makes use of the the 'immediate' infrastructure, in
my testing, of macro-benchmarks, I didn't see any performace differences
between using the immediate value vs. a global. So, i may propose this without
the immediate dependency, and optimize it later...
Also, as part of this i'd like to convert uses of 'DEBUGP' over to
pr_debug()/dev_dbg(), to tie into this infrastructure. For example, code in
kernel/module.c and kernel/params.c makes use of 'DEBUGP'

I think that hashing may be an unnecessary optimization and
that there's no real need to use a limited FILE_TABLE_SIZE
at all. I think the most likely use cases for this facility
has either one or two modules being debugged or all modules
or no modules.
