A couple of comments on memcgroup patches in your
high-priority initial section (I've not studied further yet)
> Merge, and backport to 2.6.25.x

> disable-the-memory-controller-by-default-v3.patch

If those are to go in, then the sooner the better, yes.

But though I argued for cgroup_disable=memory (or some such),
I think myself that taking it even further now (requiring an
additional cgroup_enable=memory at boottime to get the memcg
stuff you chose with CGROUP_MEM_RES_CTLR=y at build time) is
confusing overkill, just messing around.

Others think differently. A compromise would be to improve the
helptext for CGROUP_MEM_RES_CTLR (some of it is presently nonsense,
isn't it? Certainly there's a significant overhead, but it's the
32-bit struct page not the 64-bit which then suffers from crossing
cacheline boundaries). Not much point in mentioning
cgroup_disable=memory if those patches go in, but needs to say
cgroup_enable=memory bootoption also needed.

> memcgroup-check-and-initialize-page-cgroup-in-memmap_init_zone.patch

No, it was a good find from Shi, but you were right to think the patch
fishy, and Kame put in lots of work (thank you!) to identify the actual
culprit: he and Mel are discussing what the actual fix should be; and
we might want to choose a different fix for stable than for 2.6.26.

I think you should drop that memmap_init_zone patch: the cgroup
pointer is not the only field we assume is zeroed, both flags and
mapping can cause trouble if they were not originally zeroed.
Re-zero the whole struct page? No, far better to fix the
root of the corruption, that Kame and Mel are working on.

Hugh

My concern around this is "default" action of cgroups may be different

I'll test and repodt Mel's patch later. I think Shi's patch will be
unnecessary.

Yes, it does sound a bit silly. I'd say just enable it, and provide a
cgroup_disable.

OK, I'll drop that one.

Thanks - it helps.

OK, fair enough. Andi Kleen spoke about the overhead and how distros would
be impacted if they enabled CONFIG_MEM_RES_CTLR and it was not disabled by
default. I think the enable/disable is good. I just need to turn on/off
mem_cgroup_subsys.disabled. The patch is as simple as

This would enable the memory controller by default, it can be disabled
using cgroup_disable=memory at boot time.

Thanks. I've not been able to reproduce Shi's problem. I should find
an IA64 box and try and reproduce it. Since KAME is well on top of it,
I've been just listening in and reading the code.

how about working on a runtime switch that only enables the whole
memcgroup machinery when an actual cgroup gets created - and disable it
again once the last cgroup goes.

Sounds like an interesting option to explore. I'll explore that a bit more.

Maybe force_empty() will be a help for disabling ;)

- stop accountig new pages.
- calling force_empty if there are no childs.

problem is enabling.

A problem will be that we cannot account page-cache again because
it's on radix-tree when cgroup is re-enabled.

And 2.6.25 does already have that cgroup_disable=memory bootoption to
disable the config-enabled MEM_RES_CTLR and almost all of its overhead
(just leaving the extra pointer in struct page).

That's a simple patch on top of:
disable-the-memory-controller-by-default-v3.patch
disable-the-memory-controller-by-default-v3-fix.patch

But even simpler is just to drop those patches, yes?
What's the point of adding cgroup_enable if nothing uses it?
And especially not for going into -stable.

I've added Andi to the Cc's, I don't want to sneak away something
he's expecting there. If 2.6.25 had gone out with a convention that
controller infrastructure gets compiled in, but has then to be enabled
at boottime or runtime, okay; but switching back and forth between
defaults of enabled and disabled between releases (and between
controllers, as you seem to envisage) bothers me.

The config helptext (along with some misinformation) does conclude
Only enable when you're ok with these trade offs and really
sure you need the memory resource controller.
so I don't see why we now need to switch to disabled by default both
in config and at bootime - too many hurdles to my mind.

That is what I have been expecting yes.

If later the slow down is fixed it can be also enabled by default too.

Yes, which are in 2.6.25-mm1. I don't mean to sneak these patches in, just
pointing out an approach to solving that problem. I am not against removing the
patches mentioned above either. Your point of the overheads and the boot option
and the memory control being enabled by default in 2.6.25 is valid (we already
have those in).

I am not trying to sneak anything in. We have two different view points on
enabling/disabling by default. I just wanted to show that making the change to
enable/disable is easy -- the patch was not meant for inclusion. The patch is
easy, but the decision needs more discussion.

We do have differing opinions on this one. I think one of Andi's points was that
if a distro were to pick up 2.6.25 and they enabled CONFIG_CGROUPS_MEM_RES_CTLR
they would have several complaints of the overhead from users. I am open to what
is the best solution for such a situation. More opinions and brain-storming will
help.

It is disabled by default, in the config; and Paul/Balbir already
provided the cgroup_disable=memory bootoption to override that.

Is it wise to add an additional hurdle now that 2.6.25 has gone out?
Is it wise to switch it around in future? Seems a source of confusion
to me (I already wasted time testing the same things twice in -mm
because of this).

I guess Andrew needs to make an executive decision!
Whichever way round, we ought to clarify the config helptext.

Hmm, IMHO, following is a way.
1. set default config=y and change the config helptext's to
"This feature is disabled at boot time as default..."
2. add a switch to enable memory conroller after boot. (if possible)

Adding "if"s to page-fault path is too bad ?

About overhead, I think we can reduce it to some extent but amounts of
codes to be added will increase overhead again. Most of features
is not implemented now (I think).

I'm now preparing performance improvement patches on 2.6.25 and will be
able to show some numbers in the current kernel.

Thanks,
-Kame

Or more specifically, enable memory tracking when the mem controller
gets bound to a cgroup hierarchy, and disable it when the controller
is unbound.

I was going to ask you that. Last I heard,

a) stuff broke and

b) you had an updated version somewhere.

http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commit;h=b11caa7c7063ea92a0a58115d3fc6d038ed89510
but I'll check/verify/confirm that.
