Subject: Make the git URL match the usage
Change the MAINTAINERS file so that the git URL reads EXACTLY the way someone
would use it. They should only have to copy and paste it and not guess how
to modify it. Secondly, drop the "git" type when the protocol is already git://
This should save someone else the fumbling around that I went through!

Subject: Make the git URL match the usage
Change the MAINTAINERS file so that the git URL reads EXACTLY the way someone
would use it. They should only have to copy and paste it and not guess how
to modify it. Secondly, drop the "git" type when the protocol is already git://

Hi Andy, I only dropped the "git" designator in cases where the URL
protocol was git:// as in git://git.kernel.org
I believe there is no ambiguity there. I did not touch the designator
for something like quilt where http: is ambiguous.
I could leave the git designator in but I don't think it adds any
information, and it makes the line longer, and I'd rather avoid any
line wrap.

git over http really is no fun at the moment and one should really
use git:// whenever possible. Where it is not possible due to
tightknotted corporate firewalls, well, that's (a) their problem and
(b) they probably know already how to go around it.
If in doubt, just add a paragraph that one can exchange git://
by http://, but I would not make it that obvious to use an inferior
transfer protocol.

Incidentally, although I am now committed to fixing all these
problems, note that since I merely mechanically converted
git kernel.org:

git://git.kernel.org/
The rest of the source tree location was already wrong BEFORE I
touched it, as well as inconsistent, so this is another indication
that this should be fixed.

This time, in order to test that the URL was correct, I started a git clone
(and broke it off of course) on EVERY SINGLE git URL listed in the
MAINTAINERS file, even the ones that I didn't have to modify.
I believe that this patch is ready to be ACKed and applied, however
I made some observations that I will follow up on: Here is a summary.

I modified the URL to be consistent with the rest of them anyway but will pursue
this in a separate thread with Michael.
Finally, more a curiosity than anything, the following 3 repositories do NOT end in .git
but this does not seem to be a problem either.

Subject: Change the git URL to match actual usage
Change the MAINTAINERS file so that the git URL reads EXACTLY the way that
someone would use it. They should have to copy and paste it and not guess
how to modify it. Secondly, drop the "git" designator when the protocol
is already git://
This should save someone else the fumbling around that I had to do!

their contents.
More interesting is that there is no recent contents, which makes
listing the trees anyway pointless.

I could change that easily enough but TBH I prefer giving the link with

I also don't see the usefulness of having .git postfixes (it does have a
*point* though, it just does not convince me) in hives that are
obviously bare. Like, if you go into /srv/git, you would expect bare
repos, as is the case when doing a fetch from git:// or
ssh://server/srv/git/... For storing bare git repos in ~, a .git suffix
can be helpful.

It is the correct tree. This entry is for PowerPC 4xx support, not
for all of PowerPC. Josh is the PowerPC 4xx maintainer and that is
his tree.
