Ingo,

Here's some more ftrace updates.

The first should help fix the bug in lockdep.

The next are changes to the ring buffer to get ready to have it
work with splice.

The last are some clean ups for function graph.

Ingo,

Most of thes patches are improvements to function graph. I'm
working on making a way to pick a function to trace, which the
patch function entry patch is needed.

The one ring buffer patch converts all variables called 'page' to
'bpage' as per Andrew's request.

Impact: new ftrace_graph_stop function

While developing more features of function graph, I hit a bug that
caused the WARN_ON to trigger in the prepare_ftrace_return function.
Well, it was hard for me to find out that was happening because the
bug would not print, it would just cause a hard lockup or reboot.
The reason is that it is not safe to call printk from this function.

Looking further, I also found that it calls unregister_ftrace_graph,
which grabs a mutex and calls kstop machine. This would definitely
lock the box up if it were to trigger.

This patch adds a fast and safe ftrace_graph_stop() which will
stop the function tracer. Then it is safe to call the WARN ON.

Impact: clean up

Andrew Morton pointed out that the kernel convention of a variable
named page should be of type page struct. The ring buffer uses
a variable named page for a pointer to something else. This patch converts
those to be called bpage.

Impact: better dumpstack output

I noticed in my crash dumps and even in the stack tracer that a
lot of functions listed in the stack trace are simply
return_to_handler which is ftrace graphs way to insert its own
call into the return of a function. But we lose out where
the actually function was called from.

This patch adds in hooks to the dumpstack mechanism that detects
this and finds the real function to print. Both are printed to
let the user know that a hook is still in place.

This does give a funny side effect in the stack tracer output:

Impact: feature, let entry function decide to trace or not

This patch lets the graph tracer entry function decide if the tracing
should be done at the end as well. This requires all function graph
entry functions return 1 if it should trace, or 0 if the return should
not be traced.

hm, that's in the hotpath. What's the point of this? Do we want some sort 
of configuration vector that allows per function graphing versus 
entry-only traces?

after your stream of ftrace patches i'm now getting easy crashes in the 
function-graph tracer - these crashes didnt occur before. See below an

Yeah, I can fix that up. This is a side effect of the change, the funny 
output is a stack trace fix. It did not handle not finding the function in 
the stack very well. It's not a dangling pointer or anything. It is just 
a hickup in the calculation:

Notice that 3568 + 240 = 3808

But how about I make it this:

Actually, I'm fine with taking it out. But when we register a function 
graph, we register both a entry and exit. I would think it should still 
work if one was still set as the default. Unless we document it someplace 
that either the entry or exit must be set.

This change has the function graph work if one or the other is set to 
something other than the default.

Also, this is only in the static ftrace path, not dynamic, but then again, 
maybe that means it is even hotter.

I'm fine with pulling this out. It was not really needed, I was just 
trying to make it intuitive.

Hmm, I've actually had it the other way :-(  I hit this same crash without 
the patches, and it went away after adding my patches.

I like it that way too. One should choose wether setting a callback on
entry or return or both.
But it makes sense for me that should work with only one...

...unless. Actually setting only a callback on entry shoud better been
done from the ftrace-function-tracer.

I've never had such a thing (didn't tested yet with the last Steven's
patches). But I had a strange
warn_on_slowpath at the middle of a reboot which seems to rely on the
function-graph-tracer, or perhaps ring-buffer,
both where cited in the trace. But my stacktraces were dirty. It
should be more understandable with the Steven latest patches
which fix the nasty stacktraces....

I will test all of that this evening.

Note, I've only seen this bug when I had stack tracer running as well. And 
according to Ingo's config, he has it turned on too. Could you test with 
CONFIG_STACK_TRACER as well.

Ingo,

These patches are fixes for the wakeup tracer.

The first is a fix to the empty output you reported to me earlier.

The second is a fix for the ring buffer to not record updates
if it is disabled, otherwised you can get empty traces there too.

The third is the wakeup change to record all tasks and not just
realtime tasks. It adds a wakeup_rt tracer to record only rt tasks.

The forth is the addition of the scheduling wakeup and sched switch
output to the wakeup tracer. This is very helpful data.

The last is probably the most important, and should go into 29 as well.
I never reset the timestamps used to connect the trace stamps in
the buffers. This can cause stale stamps to appear and explains
some of the really bad timestamps in the buffer I've seen.

okay, i've pulled your fixes into tip/tracing/ftrace and i've cherry-picked 
the timestamp fix over into tracing/urgent.
