This reverts commit 9559fcdbff4f93d29af04478bbc48294519424f5. The commit causes
wrong screen resolution on some i915 machines such as MacBook which is a
regression from 2.6.35. The issue has been reported multiple times but no fix
has emerged:

  - i915: 2.6.36-rc2 wrong resolution on gdm start:
    http://lkml.org/lkml/2010/8/23/452

  - i915: wrong framebuffer size in 2.6.36-rc3
    http://kerneltrap.org/mailarchive/linux-kernel/2010/8/30/4613057

I think it's time to revert the commit and try again in 2.6.37.

NAK. You can't simply hide one bug by introducing a much bigger one.

As you have an affected machine, find which wait_for_vblank() needs to be
replaced with a msleep(20|50).

Dude, it's a nasty regression from 2.6.35. What exactly are you NAK'ing here?

The attached patch fixes things here. I'm not a drm developer so I
don't know if it makes technical sense.

Many thanks to you, Pekka: I also don't know if it makes technical sense,
but it solves the same issue for me, so I can at last use 2.6.36-rc on
this laptop. I sure hope this or an equivalent makes it into -rc4.

Helps for me as well, but I cannot judge whether it makes technical
sense either. Thanks, Pekka!

Sadly this doesn't help my EeePC 900 with an i915 when it is booted with
a battery inside or after doing a suspend to ram (running
modetest/xrandr in these situations says VGA is connected when there
isn't even a cable attached).

I haven't heard of this problem. Is it reported on LKML? Is it a
regression from 2.6.35?

Well, this is very strange. I also own an EeePC 900 (i915 of course)
and I don't have this problem at all, nor I need the patch. Actually I
run a plain 2.6.36-rc3 and it works perfectly.

I use the latest userspace available, with xorg 1.9 and Intel video
driver v. 2.12 (Archlinux testing repositories).

Which kernel / userspace are you using?

OK that's interesting - are you seeing correct xrandr output after a
suspend and resume too? I previously said that everything was working
perfectly a few weeks ago (only correct inputs were reported, only one
FIFO message in dmesg, no tearing on video, no cursor disappearing,
screen size was correct when X started, running xrandr doesn't make the
screen flash white etc) and added my tested-by line only to find out
that there were cases where phantom inputs were still being reported (
http://marc.info/?l=linux-kernel&m=128272404206696&w=2 ).

I'm using a 2.6.36-rc3 kernel (with the patch). I think userspace X is
less relevant as I can reproduce the false VGA detection without X
starting please see http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29857
for more details). I've tested the 2.12 intel drivers which you can add
via xorg-edgers (which I think was 1.8 but I'd have to check) and the
2.9 drivers which ship with Ubuntu 10.04 (which is xorg 1.7.6). The
newer X userspace pieces show a nice speedup in things like desktop
effects and textured video but if X doesn't run and inputs are being
mis-detected then I don't think it is the root of the problem...

I'm interested to know if it is just me seeing this issue. Did you even
have a problem with 2.6.36-rc2? Do you have any debugging options (e.g.
lock dep checking) on that would slow your kernel down and stop the
issue from ocurring?

Yes I did report it on the LKML (the initial report is
http://lkml.org/lkml/2010/8/23/432 ) but I've being trying to track
other reports mentioning similar symptoms too (e.g. I mentioned the
previous link to you in http://lkml.org/lkml/2010/8/29/52 ) but it seems
like they might different. The Intel guys spent a good while doing
investigations and having me try patches which is what led to a half fix
( http://marc.info/?l=linux-kernel&m=128267471015593&w=2 ) but there are
still situations which show problems (e.g. after suspend to ram). I've
also created a bug on the xorg bugzilla (
http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29857 ) which has more
debugging information. The problem is there are so many symptoms but
worse, the triggers are weird/marginal so it's hard to tell if it has
been fixed.

Yes it is a regression from 2.6.35 see
http://lkml.org/lkml/2010/8/24/132 where I bisected it down to commit
9d0498a2bf7455159b317f19531a3e5db2ecc9c4 .

Never had this kind of issues. I also tested rc2 without problems.

Hmm I'm at a loss to explain what I'm seeing (and why you aren't). For
what it's worth, I'm including my current kernel config below (no
modules so you will have to use root=/dev/foo to tell it the initial
device). Can you build a kernel with it and report back what you see?:

Is someone picking this patch up or am I supposed to send it to Linus?

I have applied this patch to

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/~ickle/drm-intel/

Thanks.

The "drm-intel" branch on top of 2.6.36-rc3 works OK on my machine. I

Do you see this on 2.6.36-rc3 as well? I had thought we had seen the last
of those. lspci would be useful to know precisely which chipset is
throwing that error.

> [ 1.660043] [drm:intel_calculate_wm] *ERROR* Insufficient FIFO for

These are based on a pessimistic guess for the memory latency and so
we overestimate the number of FIFO entries required to avoid underruns.
All that has changed is that we now print out the warning and have been
surprised by how far out our estimation has been. We first need to find
some way of improving our estimate for the memory latency and so trim the
watermarks. And under the circumstances where we need more entries than
are available on one pipe, we need to adjust the FIFO configuration.

In the short term, we will need to quieten the "harmless" error message.

I've lost track of the current status for releasing the documentation for
gen2/3. As always, it should be ready real soon now.

I'm not sure if those ever got fixed for my machine. I see them on

<snip the whole config>

Well, actually I can't because your config is too different from mine.
Not only I use btrfs as the root filesystem; the main difference is
that my root and home partitions are on two dm-crypt volumes.

I see that the patch has been applied, so when it reaches mainline I
will test and report back.

Last I heard, the hw guys wanted to do a scrub but wouldn't be able to
allocate time for that until Nov. or so. We may be able to get the
display section out sooner though, I'll check.
