Hi,
I believe this is a regression as it was working on 2.6.37 but with
2.6.38-rc3 I can't burn DVDs with my latitute e6410. When I put a blank
double layer DVD on the drive I get:

:-( /dev/dvd: CD_ROM_MEDIA_CHANGED ioctl failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
Has anyone seen that before ? I'll try to reboot on 2.6.37 and try again
just to be sure and will report back on the differences.

yes, it works like a charm on 2.6.37:
$ dmesg

What more information can I grab which would help debugging ? I guess I
could bisect and try to find the offending commit, but that'll take a
few days.

Nothing's changed in dell-wmi in that timeframe, so I suspect it's some
other issue that's triggering here and the hardware is responding by
sending events? Alternatively, these messages are pretty spread out. Do
they directly correspond to you trying to burn something?

it's actually right after inserting a disc on the drive. I'll try
switching to AHCI on BIOS and see if it works fine.

Hm. I'd still lean towards blaming something in the ata layer - I can't
see any way that dell-wmi could be directly involved, and it's primarily
just a mechanism for the firmware to report events to the OS.

it's the same. I also got the same messages on 2.6.37 after inserting a
second disk but still was able to burn the disc, so I don't think
dell-wmi is to blame here, like you said before.

Dear list,
I am a new member to the list, so I am hoping I am doing the right
thing. I found the list and the topic line above while tailing
my /var/log/messages and noticed that the subject-line was showing up
everytime I hit the following key combination:
fn + left arrow (auto lightning)
fn + right arrow (on/off keyboard backlight)
fn + up arrow (screen brightness up)
fn + down arrow (screen brightness down)
Hope this information is of interest to those working on this issue.
