[PATCH] Update email address for stable patch submission

[Josh Boyer]

The stable@kernel.org email address has been replaced with the
stable@vger.kernel.org mailing list.  Change the stable kernel rules to
reference the new list instead of the semi-defunct email alias.

To my understanding, stable@kernel.org is now just a forward to
stable@vger.kernel.org.  However, John mentioned that due to some
configuration issues the vger list might be dropping things from
stable@kernel.org on the floor.  So it's not working in a useful way at
the moment, and from what I can tell patches that need to be backported
and submitted to stable are kind of difficult to get in because of this.

Personally, I'd rather see the vger list take over entirely.  However,
that decision will remain in the more than capable hands of the admins.

I'm wondering if we have the same replacement for x86@kernel.org which 
I've received multiple bounces from (not sure if it currently is or not, I 
haven't tried because of that recently) or things like security@kernel.org 
or trivial@kernel.org.

security@ will remain as-is, when it gets back up and working.  I don't
know about trivial@, I wasn't aware of that one.  The mailman stuff for
kernel.org is pretty far down the list of priority of what is being
worked on.

It was bouncing (and noticably so) as of a week ago but I believe hpa has 
since setup an alias to point to stable@vger.kernel.org.  Linus cc'd his 
own commit to it yesterday, a84a79e4d369, so as long as you didn't get a 
bounce email it should have gone through.

 [ I believe Greg also has gone through everything with a
   "Cc: stable@kernel.org" in Linus' tree as well, either automatically 
   or because of the bounces. ]

It should have bounced.

But, if you put a "Cc: stable@kernel.org" in the patch, I'm still
picking that up properly when it goes to Linus's tree.

If I haven't responded to any patches you have sent to stable@ already,
please resend them to stable@vger.kernel.org and cc: me to ensure it
gets here.

Doesn't help if two of the patch have been for a while, and the
others need various small updates to apply against 3.0 (file renames
and macro removal)

It doesn't bounce anymore.  The alias exists again, and it forwards to
the vger list.  However, there are some configuration issues where some
kind of email loop (I'm very fuzzy on the details) can/does occur
between the two, and as far as I know anything getting sent to
stable@kernel.org is getting dropped on the floor.

As Christoph said, that doesn't help patches that need to be
retro-actively submitted.  I sent a couple last night before I
remembered the problems, hence this patch.

Not true.  VGER eats them silently because the forward from
stable@kernel.org contains headers that are commonly found in
looped-back postings which we regexp block at vger.  If vger responded
in some way it would just exacerbate any real list loop.

Warty didn't thing he could fix it easily, so we decided it was most easy
to just go straight to solely using stable@vger.kernel.org and just shut
down stable@kernel.org

That's fine with me, and if stable@kernel.org is removed, it's best to
see the bounce-back happen, instead of them disappearing quietly.

It doesn't bounce, it's a mailing list looping posting protection at
vger.kernel.org which triggers because it sees certain email header
fields in the forwarded emails from kernel.org that make it look like
a list loop.

We respond to such things silently so we don't exacerbate the loop.

FWIW trivial@ wasn't powered as mailman list, but only a simple forward. 
John has fixed that one already and it's working again.
