So I build i386_defconfig and i386_defconfig + CONFIG_SMP=n, installed
them in an old gentoo-stage3 userland diskimage and booted it with KVM
with only a single CPU, both booted just fine. Then I loaded a module
(iptable_nat) and that too worked on both.
So I'm a bit at a loss and will need more details.
Sadly I do not have access to AMD hardware of that vintage.
