One hint, if you do not take this patch now, people will keep sending it over and over again :) We don't know that you will be using these functions later, as that patch hasn't even been posted yet. So it's good to take this for now, and when/if you really do need to use these functions in a future patch, it's trivial for you to just make these non-static.
