cxl/core/region.c presently contains logic to handle cxl_region,
cxl_pmem_region, and cxl_dax_region. The cxl_pmem_region and
cxl_dax_region management code deserves new files to make it clear
that this logic applies to a specific types of regions.

This also breaks up development space so fewer conflicts can occur, and
it becomes clear where changes are actually happening.

I snuck in a cleanup.h fixup for devm_cxl_add_dax_region to tidy up some
of the existing functions.

v3 -> v4:  address DJ's feedback on cleanup.h patch:
move __free() declaration to assignment point
           restore local dev variable

v2 -> v3:  renamed from x_region to region_x because it's prettier
           added cleanup.h
small nits asked for by Jonathan (commas)

Gregory Price (3):
cxl/core/region: move pmem region driver logic into region_pmem.c
cxl/core/region: move dax region device logic into region_dax.c
  cxl/core: use cleanup.h for devm_cxl_add_dax_region

region_pmem.c make it clear that this code only applies to pmem regions.

core/region.c is overloaded with per-region control logic (pmem, dax,
sysram, etc). Move the CXL DAX region device infrastructure from
region.c into a new region_dax.c file.

This will also allow us to add additional dax-driver integration paths
that don't further dirty the core region.c logic.

No functional changes.

I hadn't considered going that far, but it doesn't seem unreasonable?

It just seemed natural to break out the code this way, but I don't know
if adding more Kconfig cruft is worth it just to save some .o's and a
smaller amount of code.

The recent pmem/nvdimm Kconfig change does kind of show that we might
have some bloat for some deployments which might not care about pmem -
for example.

cxl_core-$(CONFIG_CXL_REGION) += region.o region_pmem.o

For me having them on one line makes it more obvious it's
either neither or both. Cost is a bit more churn if you
decide later to split the CONFIG_* up.

Otherwise a couple of white space things. + a passing comment on the lifetime
management being more complex than I'd like.

Fix the white space and you can add

Blank line here. There is one in the original and I can't see why
we'd want to get rid of it.

Blank line here probably makes sense as the key has nothing to do
with the EXPORT_SYMBOL...

FWIW the lifetime management in here feels way to complex to me. Not
a problem for this patch and I'm not immediately sure what we can do about it.

In many other parts of the code, device_add is not rolled back either
"for reasons", and - depending on who you talk to - this is
intentional... for debugging?

I dunno, but the "hanging objects on failure" thing is common throughout
cxl/ -

If it were consistent maybe, but in other paths in this function it is cleaned up...
So I call bug even if it's one that is relatively unlikely to actually happen.

I guess my original thought was, what is your long term intent with
the move? And I was thinking you are probably heading to conditionally
compiling. HOWEVER, now the scaredy-cat-me is thinking, shoot, that
would add test config complexity and test misses. ie. Folks make a
change in region_dax.c, don't test with CONFIG_CXL_PMEM enabled, and
boom.

So, I lean towards keeping them all (working) together, like you have.

fwiw i think this is the right take. It doesn't really cost us anything
to keep in, and probably prevents adding more Kconfig footguns.

Through some other testing I found these moves to cause failures in the
test code builds due to the new files.

The 2 patches below fix it.

commit 0248a89b7c798cbd32cf3e9eeb97a3fafb5ac15e
Author: Ira Weiny <ira.weiny@intel.com>
Date: Mon Mar 23 15:48:52 2026 -0500

cxl/testing: Fix testing build; include region_dax.o

The cxl core testing module must have the same code as the cxl core. To
do this it uses the same source files in drivers/cxl/core. Adding a new
file there must be included in the test code.

    Include region_dax.o in test file.
