My guess is that it is a joke.  'Meister Proper' is the German 
  Mister Clean (the big, bald guy on the same-name cleaning 
  agent bottle).  I'm not sure of the spelling, though.  It's been 
  a while since I've seen the commercials.
I dunno if it's Finnish, though.  Never been there.  Maybe it was
  put in by a German developer.  Maybe not.  It was there when
  I started.

Hmm; I always thought it stood for m(ake the)r(emake) proper
ie, recompile properly if something got messed up.

But I like the Mister Clean better :)

I saw a post from Linus once about this.  It is Finnish for "Mr. Clean".

   It does refer to  Procter&Gamble  household cleaning product
   titled "Mr Proper", which apparently more recently has been
   renamed as "Mr Clean".  (Or who knows how international companies
   decide on what to call the products where...)

   A semi-joke which may or may not make sense to people depending
   on if they have seen the adverts that at least Finns have seen..
   (I guess it was american advertisement dubbed into finnish.)

   "'make clean' is simple soap wash, 'make mrproper' cleans also
    tougher stains by using stronger solvents; user is advised to
    protect themselves."

Matti,

My recollection as a 50+ american is that the household cleaner Mr. Clean 
has been around since at least the 1960's.  I remember vividly the TV 
advertisements with the bald headed genie (or whatever) with his arms 
crossed and inspecting dirt or cleanliness or whatever.  With my US-centric 
upbringing, I think that Mr. Clean originated here and then went overseas, 
with appropriate translations of the product name, hence the appearance of 
Mr. Proper.

That's what I know about Mr. Clean vs. Mr. Proper.  I believe it correct, 
but I'm not a Procter & Gamble historian.

Just to be sure: 'proper' does not mean anything in Finnish (nor Swedish
for that matter AFAIK) it just the European(?) product name for 'Mr
Clean'. Possibly it's from German ('proper' = 'clean').

In CZ, we have Mr. Proper too - it's same as Mr Clean, but 'proper' doesn't
mean anything in czech too. I think it's just an international name for
that tool, which is using everywhere.

I think we explained it totally cleanly (properly ;-) and we are going really
offtopic now ;-).

You've spelled it correct.

Sure it was, since Mr. Proper already existed in the sixties...
People who don't know what it means usually use make spotless. 
I have also already seen Mr. Proper in the US, and some other countries
seem to have it, too.

I wouldn't call all clean things proper, and I would really not call all
proper things clean. That's one thing I learned in europe.
