Ok, there's a largish 2.5.8-pre1 patch out there in testing right now.
It syncs up with various sources over the last two weeks - notably USB,
networking, sparc, net drivers, and the beginning of the -dj tree merge.
Some of the merges are known incomplete (eg some drivers do not compile
etc), but testing is always a good idea.
Changelog appended.

This patch completely punts on passing SLAB_POISON, I've
gotten burnt by it once too many. Seems like the slab code
changed somewhere. I've got a separate patch to make the
pci_pool code use CONFIG_DEBUG_SLAB, which I'll send
around.
Meanwhile, I needed this to get at least EHCI to intialize on
a 2.5.7-pre1 system. Please merge.

USB echi and Intel ICH
This updates the Philips tweak so that it also applies
to late-model ICH chips from Intel. (Or so I'm told ... :)
That's at least three EHCI implementations known to
behave on Linux. (And one hopes VIA soon too...)
It also cleans up a few comments relating to 64bit DMA;
recent API spec updates make it look like no games are
needed with the PCI DMA mask -- it doesn't change the
segment used by pci_pool allocations, so it just needs
to get turned on if the overall system does 64bit DMA.
I've a query in to see if those Philips/Intel tweaks are
chip quirks, or just something the EHCI 1.0 spec isn't
at all clear about.

This is ever so slightly forward looking in how it describes

[PATCH] uhci.c 2.4.19-pre3 kmem_cache_alloc flags
My previous patch which cleaned up some of the spinlocks, moved one of
the spinlocks around a call to kmem_cache_alloc. It would sometimes
erroneously call it with GFP_KERNEL.
This patch fixes the problem by always calling it with GFP_ATOMIC.

[PATCH] uhci.c 2.4.19-pre3 erroneous completion callback
uhci.c would call the completion callback when the call to submit_urb
failed. This is a rare situation.
This patch only calls the completion handler if the URB successfully
completed immediately (as in the case of talking to the virtual root
hub).

[PATCH] uhci.c 2.4.19-pre3 interrupt deadlock
Unfortunately, I left out one line from my spinlock cleanup patch
recently.
As a result, using interrupt URB's could cause a deadlock on SMP
kernels.
This should fix the deadlock Greg reported.

2.5.x, but it's always better to do less while holding a spinlock.
Also a good idea to keep 2.{4,5}.x drivers in sync.

USB usbfs periodic endpoint/bandwidth reporting
This is an updated version of a patch I sent around a
while back. It's against 2.5.7-pre1 (so presumably is
fine on 2.5.7), and addresses feedback against that
earlier patch.
It's bugfixes, mostly for highspeed support, to what
/proc/bus/usb/devices shows:
- Shows isochronous periods correctly (logarithmic
encoding, possibly 1/2/4 microframes if highspeed)
- Likewise for high-speed interrupt periods (similar)
- Makes high bandwidth endpoints look like they
just do bigger packets (up to 3 KBytes/uframe)
- Shows highspeed bandwidth correctlly (80% reserved,
vs 90% reserved for full/low speed).

e100 net driver update:
1) This patch provides fix for "wake on arp" and "wake on unicast"
functionality when card is suspended by power management. When e100_suspend
was called for the device that is in netif_running state the load filter
command was executed in the asynchronic mode and the order of actions
required to put device into wake up enabled mode was broken.
The fix enables to execute WOL configure and load filter commands in the
synchronic mode despite of fact that device is in netif_running state. The
exec_non_cu_command uses the driver_isolated flag to identify this
situation.

Code (and commentary) in SYN-RECEIVED processing
assumes that it cannot be reached in the crossed SYN case.
This is wrong if the original SYNs came from a malicious packet
generator third party. This can result in a 4 minute ACK
fight if the sequence numbers are correct.
The fix is the verify the ACK before we do anything else, which
should cover all cases.
This bug was discovered by Casper Dik.

it to us as well, but I didn't clear out a pointer (qh->urbp) and later
dereferenced it.

Periodically folk have run into problems where usb-ohci oopses
due to device refcount bugs ...
This is a minor patch to move the sanity check out of usb-ohci
into the generic bits of usbcore. There are comments that
suggest a path for a more comprehensive approach too.
Applies cleanly against 2.5.7 and I've been testing with it
for a while. I can't think of any reason it shouldn't also go
into 2.4, beyond the patch not applying cleanly there ... :)

- Remove the drive niec1 mechanisms alltogether. There are several reasons for
this:
1. The code implementing it is nonintelliglible and therefore propably
broken.
2. If we have to invent somethig about sceduling drive IO, it should be done
on the BIO level.
3. We may in fact interleave with the IO sceduling on the upper layers and
the results of two overlapping signal filters overlapped with each other can
be disasterous to the overall throughput. (In fact they *are* most of the
time.)
4. It was not working if you had intermixed modes on different drives
DMA versus PIO.
5. Our goal is to have a driver which is able to share the badwidth
properly and shouldn't needing this kind of "tuning".
- Remove unused nice2 from disk struct.
- Rename channel member of ata_channel to unit and device to dev to
just prevent wrong interpretations. This prevents constructs like
channel->channel...

[PATCH] ext2_fill_super breakage
In 2.5.7 there is a thinko in the allocation and initialisation
of the fs-private superblock for ext2. It's passing the wrong type
to the sizeof operator (which of course gives the wrong size)
when allocating and clearing the memory.
Lesson for the day: this is one of the reasons why this idiom:
some_type *p;
p = malloc(sizeof(*p));
...
memset(p, 0, sizeof(*p));
is preferable to
some_type *p;
p = malloc(sizeof(some_type));
...
memset(p, 0, sizeof(some_type));
I checked the other filesystems. They're OK (but idiomatically
impure). I've added a couple of defensive memsets where
they were missing.

I've just noticed that a hole left in the recent changes which should
allow the usb v4l drivers to unregister with open file handles. The
drivers itself handle it just fine, but video_generic_ioctl() will barf
when called on unregistered devices. Oops.
One way to fix this is to expect drivers call the helper function and
pass a pointer for the function doing the actual work, i.e. handle it
this way:
driver_ioctl(inode,file,cmd,userptr)
-> video_usercopy(inode,file,cmd,userptr,func)
copy_from_user(...)
-> func(inode,file,cmd,kernelptr);
copy_to_user(...)
Patch against 2.5.7-pre2 below. It updates videodev.[ch] and adapts
usbvideo.c to show how the driver changes will look like.
Note that this change makes the usercopy helper function a very generic
one, it probably could be used for other drivers to (as long as the API
has sane magic numbers based on _IO*(...) defines) as there is no
video4linux-related stuff in there any more. So we might think of
renaming it an moving it to some more central place (fs/ioctl.c maybe).

[PATCH] simple preemption debug check
This simple check was first suggested by Andrew Morton. Pretty basic -
whines if a task exits with a nonzero preempt_count value.
I put an identical check in the 2.4 preempt-kernel patch and - sure
enough - it was found that XFS essentially disables preemption as it
destroys data structures containing locks without first unlocking. The
SGI folks are working on that.
Anyhow, its a quick and clean solution to debugging potential problems.
Patch is against 2.5.7, please apply.

What the heck is "dquot-nr"?
The breakup between the two abbreviations is not nice for the following reasons:
1. Invention of - is redundant becouse the whole thing is an abbreviation
anyway.
2. It violates C/perl/whatever rules for item names.
3. The order of "nr" "preposition" and the "-" after the item is not consistant
with the actual usage in application code!
The surrounding FS_NRDQUOT and nr_dquots show nicely that replacing
"dquot-nr" with "nrdquot" would fit much better and be much more consistant
with the implicite naming conventions used by programmers. Far easier
to grasp becouse there is no such thing as a disk quota of numbers...
Just nit-picking and ducking... ;-)

Thank you for pointing it out. Of course it just shouldn't be enabled
unconditionally there. Apparently it "slipped in" during some
compiling for "code coverage". My appologies for the inconvenience.
It will be disabled in the next patch round.

SUPPORT_VLB_SYNC is now unconditionally hardcoded to 1 in
drivers/ide/ide-taskfile.c.

patches (the 50% ratio seems to have held up pretty well over time:
about half of the submissions I get are old-style patches, with half being
BK merges. Of course, for me the advantage of BK is that the BK merge half
often required _much_ less than 50% of the time).
Anyway: of the 147 patches, 125 were merges from Dave Jones (only 123 are
marged as such - two were re-attributed by me by hand by editing the
emails directly).
And of those 123 changesets marked as coming from Dave, most were
obviously written by others, and Dave acted as integrator (which is not
unimportant, of course - 99% of what I do myself is only integration these
days).
So the statistics get skewed by details like this - if is only a partial
map of who actually _wrote_ the patch.
(The same is sometimes true of the BK patches themselves, not just the
email patches I get from integrators liek Dave who still use diffs to
merge with me. It depends on who and how the original BK changeset was
created, of course).

OK, I think I see. If you get a GNU patch from someone like Dave who got
it from someone else, then it shows up as Dave in your changelogs. Hmm.
Do you think it is worthwhile to try and do some parsing of the message
such that we can set $BK_USER to the right person if the message contains
the info? Dave is pretty good about doing stuff like

If we formalized that a bit we could get the annotations right. I know
it may sound like an ego stroking exercise, but it's actually very useful
when looking at the annotated history to see who did something, it makes
it easier to track them down and feed them new changes/suggestions/etc.

to happen anyway.

Quite a few that got to you via Jeff's bk tree were also regular GNU
patches from me. I think the total yesterday was over 200 patches pushed
from me. Who still thinks Linus doesn't scale ? 8-)

As a sidenote, I don't mind being attributed in the csets as the source
of where the patch came from, but where I remember/know where the patch
is coming from, I'm making a note in the msg that goes along with it
to the effect of 'Originally from : Joe Hacker'.

If I stuck to a common way of marking the original author, you could
probably enhance your merging scripts to suck that out and attribute
$whoever instead. This only works for patches where I
a. Remember where they came from
b. Are not parts of large "suck everything from latest 2.4.x-pre"
(In most cases, I have no idea who the original author is unless
they were mentioned in the changelog, or I spotted the mail on l-k)
c. I remember to add the magic tag
d. I don't typo the tag/get it wrong.
With Marcelo using bk these days, is it possible that you can cherry
pick certain csets from his bk tree ? If so, it may be that as time
goes on, the need for my forward ports becomes less useful.
Though I'm guessing this would end up more work for you having to
sit clicking around in bk's conflict resolution tool.
Could work well for the simple bits though.

I couldn't work out how to make BK even attempt that.
If you commit harmless and irrelevant changeset 'X' to a repository, then
commit a completely separate changeset 'Y' which doesn't touch any of the
same files, then it seems to be impossible¹ to import 'Y' into a different
tree without also importing 'X'.

If you want to do it preserving all the BK info, i.e., a pull with some
option to send a particular changeset, that doesn't work. BK has an
invariant which is that the parent of any changeset you send must be
present in the receiving repository or it won't work.
What you want to do is cherrypick, to do that with BK you have two choices:
a) wait for LODs
b) export as a patch and import as a patch.
The second one works fine but causes problems over the long run, especially
with file creates.

Copy the post-changeset SCCS files for the changed files to the new
repository.
Get the relevant lines identifying each new delta from the ChangeSet file
in the original repository, add them to the ChangeSet file in the
new repository, and bk ci it.
Mutter darkly that this really shouldn't be hard to get BK to do by
itself, in the case where the pre-changeset files are identical in
each repository.
Admittedly I hadn't created any files that time, just committed a large
patch by copying in the new version of many files (from a CVS tree), running
bk citool and giving an appropriate change log for each one - hence I didn't
want to lose the change logs by exporting and reimporting it when I
realised I'd actually done it in the wrong repository.

bk pull the two repositories together, run bk -r check -ap and watch it
get unhappy.
Mutter darkly that people really seem to not understand it's a distributed,
replicated system and playing with the datastructures will make it unhappy.

Hehe yeah - but as I said, I'd just committed it to the wrong repository,
so the next step was to undo the changeset from that one anyway.
Then as a sanity check, 'bk send' it from the repository to which I'd
transplanted it, compare with the original results of 'bk send' of the
same changeset from the original tree, blow away everything and
'bk receive' the changeset into a fresh clone of the proper tree.
Mutter ye not - at least I ditched the idea of copying the SCCS files,
removing the 'dD' lines which seem to mean they're part of a committed
changeset, then making a new changeset from the 'pending' deltas :)
