I was reading back a freshly burned CD from my shiny new Plexwriter
48/24/48A.  I'm using ide-scsi, so this is an iso9660 filesystem mounted
from /dev/scd0.  After reading for a while, apparently successfully, it
started failing with the messages below:

yes, the ide-scsi bug should be fixed too, of course... but I cannot
care too much about that in 2.5, should mainly be a non-cd/dvd atapi
host.

Mostly because I couldn't make cdrecord work properly with ide-cd - it
kept claiming I had an adaptec disk connected rather than the plextor
cdrom:

Nope cdrecord is fine, but I think only open by device name works
currently. So you'd need to do

# cdrecord -dev=/dev/hdX -inq

to print inquiry data, for instance.

It was the PLD cdrtools-2.01a05-1.i386.rpm; it is the same source I
built from, though it was looking in /usr/include/linux for headers, and
I changed my build to go to /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build/include.

I worked it out.  The source out of the box looks in
/etc/default/cdrecord; most distros change that to /etc/cdrecord.conf.

I've seen this bug reported before. But that's interesting, will try it
on my test box. Linus reported some problem with single byte commands
months ago, maybe this is related.

Really weird, I can't reproduce here at all. My drive gives the correct
result no matter if it's empty or loaded. Results are repeatable, too.
DMA or PIO, didn't matter.

I can reliably crash the box with SG_IO -> ide-cd here, so I'm hoping
there's a connection. Need to move it to a box where nmi watchdog
actually works...

Sorry: I meant "cdrecord dev=/dev/hdc -checkdrive" returns correct
"supported modes".

I was wrong, however: it is still broken.  Sometimes it will return
version 2/format 2 results time after time (with supported modes), but
then I leave it for a while and it reverts to returning 0/1 results with
no supported modes.  There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason about
it: the "put a disc in and it works" trick doesn't work any more.

This is with 2.5.64-mm8.  What other details would help?  strace output
of cdrecord?

Does this patch help at all? At least it solves the hard hangs (machine
double faults) in some circumstances. Linus, please apply. It may not be
this bug, but it's at least one bug.

If I assume /dev/hdc is your CDROM drive then my machine also reports 
these errors. This happens on 2.4.x as well as 2.5.x. This is most 
probably due to loose connection in the CDROM drive. Mine is a HP
removable CDROM drive. If I re-insert it or "push" the drive module
in the slot the problem disappears. Sometimes the CDROM drive is 
identified as a removable floppy drive. Push the CDROM drive and reboot 
the kernel it is identified as proper CDROM drive. But never got a
kernel BUG.

There are still userspace CD burning programs that do not yet 
support ATAPI burning interface. "cdrecord" does support it, 
but K3B (a KDE burning frontend to cdrecord and company) 
only works with SCSI or IDE-SCSI burners (well, or at least 
I have been unable to convince it to use the ATAPI interface 
to my Sony burner).

That is quite possible. Maybe someone could compile a list of programs
that still use read/write to /dev/sg*?

I had at some point planned to allow arbitrary block device -> /dev/sg*
mapping, maybe it would be a good idea to finish that thought. Then you
wouldn't have to rely on programs using SG_IO ioctl, which does seem
like a bad idea.
