Marcelo, I received this error from LILO with 2.4.21-SMP (devfs,1 GB RAM): Warning: '/proc/partitions' does not match '/dev' directory structure. Name change: '/dev/hdc' -> '/tmp/dev.0' Warning: '/dev' directory structure is incomplete; device (22, 0) is missing. Added Linux * I have never seen this error with any earlier kernel. For reference, I am using LILO 22.5.6, and my CD-ROM support is completely modular. This is what /proc/partitions contained at the time: # more /proc/partitions major minor #blocks name 58 0 9637888 system/lvol1 58 1 4800512 user/lvol1 22 0 8292958 hdc 3 0 19925880 ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc 3 1 4980118 ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1 3 2 9639000 ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part2 3 3 4803435 ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part3 3 4 498015 ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part4 Curiously, *the ide-cd module was no longer loaded* here although there was still a DVD in the drive. I should also mention that my box has crashed in flames twice in the last 24 hours, without leaving so much as a hint in any log file. It was also completely unresponsive to external network connections and Alt-SysRq. I have no idea whether this is related to the issue with /proc/partitions. In fact, I discovered this partition oddity after the first crash while trying to set up a serial console. My boot-log is appended (from the second crash), along with my .config file. Cheers, Chris Linux version 2.4.21 (chris@twopit) (gcc version 3.2.3) #2 SMP Fri Jun 13 21:36:46 BST 2003 BIOS-provided physical RAM map: BIOS-e820: 0000000000000000 - 000000000009dc00 (usable) BIOS-e820: 000000000009dc00 - 00000000000a0000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000000e0000 - 0000000000100000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 0000000000100000 - 000000003ffe0000 (usable) BIOS-e820: 000000003ffe0000 - 000000003fff8000 (ACPI data) BIOS-e820: 000000003fff8000 - 0000000040000000 (ACPI NVS) 127MB HIGHMEM available. 896MB LOWMEM available. found SMP MP-table at 000faf50 hm, page 000fa000 reserved twice. hm, page 000fb000 reserved twice. hm, page 000f4000 reserved twice. hm, page 000f5000 reserved twice.
