I've found that neither linus.patch nor
context-switch-accounting-fix.patch is causing the problem, but rather
acpi-pm-timer-fixes.patch & acpi-pm-timer.patch

With these applied my cpu (athlon64) is detected as 0.0Mhz, bogomips
drops to 50% and anything cpu intensive destroys interactivity. Revert
them and performance is back at -mm2 level.

I was able to reproduce the interactivity problem, too. My simple testcase 
was:
1. open a KDE Konsole
2. execute "while true; do a=2; done" in the Konsole
3. Move the Konsole window.

With test9-mm3 booted with "clock=pit" or "clock=pmtmr" moving the window was 
very sluggish... Booted with "clock=tsc" made it work fine again. (Btw. which 
kind of hardware is needed to make "clock=hpet" work?)

The problem is that sched_clock() uses the TSC if the hardware supports it. 
But the needed scaling factors are only initialized in init_tsc() and 
init_hpet(). So there are 2 possibilities to fix this:
1. Call the neccessary parts of init_tsc() in init_pmtmr() and init_pit().
2. Use the TSC in sched_clock() only if "clock=tsc" was set.

I've attached a small patch that does the 2nd thing. For me it fixed the 
interactivity problem...

The 2nd attached patch adds the .name field to the timer_pmtmr struct. This 
makes the kernel to show "Using pmtmr for high-res timesource" instead of 
"Using NULL for high-res timesource" when booting...

Andrew, please consider applying the patches...

Btw. the BogoMIPS value is the argument for the __delay() function needed to 
wait 1 jiffy. The difference is that the TSC version of this function uses 
the clock cycle count as its argument whereas the PMTMR and PIT versions take 
the count of loops to wait as their argument. Well, and it seems that each 
loop iteration needs 2 clock cycles.

The problem with the shown CPU frequency is, that cpu_khz is only set in 
init_tsc() and init_hpet(). But I don't know how this can be fixed without 
using the TSC...

Not configuring the ACPI PM time source in should also work as well.

As far as sched_clock() goes, I haven't followed its development
closely, but it seem that it is very close to monotonic_clock() in
functionality. The benefit of monotonic_clock is that it is implemented
for each time source (however its not implemented for every arch). For
i386 at least, we may want to make sched_clock just call
monotonic_clock, but I need to look into the details.

That tentatively looks OK to me, but I suspect that sched_clock needs
further work on i386.

__delay() is called with loops as an argument. calibrate_delay() sets
loops_per_jiffy such that mdelay() and udelay() will delay for the
proper amount of time. BogoMIPS may not line up w/ your cpu frequency,
but don't let that worry you.

You're correct, I forgot to initialize cpu_khz in the ACPI PM timesource
init code. This patch fixes that.

Here's a patch that does the above. I'm not very aware of the issues
around the scheduler so I'm not sure if the cost of going off chip to
the cyclone or ACPI PM time sources are just outright, but for the TSC
case monotonic_clock() is basically the same function as sched_clock().
So this might be the best fix for systems not using the TSC as a time
source. 

I'd be interested to hear if it has any effect on performance.

Well I applied your patch without the ones from Thomas Schlichter. Was 
is intended like that or should it be on top of Thomas patches?

I haven't tested thouroughly, but on the first impression your patch 
didn't make things really better, that's why I stoped testing. I just 
did following test:

Running prime95 as task taking 100% CPU) and started up mozilla and 
mailer. This took nearly endlessly. Deaktivating ACPI timer and things 
are fast again, ie. starting mozilla is like no background task is 
runnig. I dunno if it is a not 100% working patch or if it is Nick's 
scheduler, which I am using.

It was to go along side of Thomas' patch. Thomas caught the real issue
(sched_clock() needs to be switched on use_tsc), but cpu_khz is also
used in the scheduler, so I just wanted to make sure it was properly set
as well.

After sending out multiple patches I should have been more clear. Just
to avoid confusion:

* the init_cpu_khz patch goes along side Thomas' patch. 

* the more experimental sched_clock() -> monotonic_clock() patch I just
sent out for testing replaces Thomas' patch.

OK, now I was testing both your patches instead of mine.
The init_cpu_khz patch works as expected... THX!

Well, but the sched_clock() -> monotonic_clock() patch seems to have a 
problem...
First, everything works smoothly if the PIT or the TSC clock are selected. (It 
seems I cannot test the HPET timer due to missing hardware support)

But when booting with the PMTMR clock selected, my Interactivity test fails 
again. :-( Maybe there is a problem in the PMTMR's monotonic clock part...?!

Good call! I was mis-adding in conversion to nanoseconds. The patch
below should fix it (Andrew, feel free to ignore this, I'll sync up all
the acpi-pm changes with you later). 

Although I'm finding that the sched_clock->monotonic_clock patch doesn't
look like a win. With that patch sched_clock takes ~400-700 cycles using
clock=pmtmr. With your "fix-sched_clock.diff" patch its less then 40
cycles. 

While better accuracy is nice, I can't imagine the 10-20x cost of
sched_clock is worth it. So I think your fix is the best solution.

Well, your patch was the correct direction, but it did not completely reach 
the target... :-( The 'monotonic_base' variable in the PMTMR stores its value 
in microseconds. So the 'base' value has to be convertet to nanoseconds, 
too...

A patch that corrects that is attached...

(Btw. another solution would be to store all the values in nanoseconds by 
replacing the cyc2us function with a cyc2ns function...)

I think you are right, but the sched_clock->monotonic_clock patch helped us 
finding the problems in the monotonic_clock_pmtmr() function... ;-)

I now tried the second one and it seems to work, tough I am not sure 
whether the performance is as good as APCI timer deavt. It seems that 
now CPU Hz is not shown anymore. Have a look at my dmesg:

So I deactivated the PM timer again and my computer is much faster 
again. Haven prime in the background taking 100% doesn't noticeable 
affect deskop performance. But I think I know where the problem lies:

Using tsc for high-res timesource


In above dmesg you can see that nothing was used as timesource, but here 
in current dmesg tsc is used. Is this normal or a bug? Need I pass a 
kernel paramtere when pm timer is enbaled?

The init_cpu_khz patch is the one that displays the calibrated CPU
frequency. The two patches listed above address independent bugs.

Yes, Thomas pointed out that the sched_clock->monotonic_clock patch
didn't seem to work for pmtmr. I'm looking into if the pmtmr's
montonic_clock call is doing the right thing (didn't have my laptop
yesterday). 

For now Thomas' patch to switch on "use_tsc" is the best fix when using
the pmtmr.

No, its just cosmetic. Both Thomas and I have sent out a patch that
initializes the name field in the pmtmr's timer_opts struct.

So I deactivated the PM timer again and my computer is much faster 
again. Haven prime in the background taking 100% doesn't noticeable 
affect deskop performance. But I think I know where the problem lies:

I'm running -mm3 and haven't noticed any interactivity problems as far
as the ACPI PM timer support is *not enabled*. Enabling ACPI PM timer,
makes the system feel rather sluggish.

Probably the interactivity problems are due to the CPU scheduler thinking
that the CPU runs at 0Hz.  If we can work out why the PM timer patch has
broken the CPU clock speed detection then all should be well.

Is this in "plain" test9 as well? can't find any reference to either
bogomips or to cpu_khz in any scheduler-related code in
2.6.0-test9-bk-as-of-yesterday.

cpu_khz is done during init_tsc. The code is basically:

tsc_quotient = calibrate_tsc();

	:"r" (tsc_quotient),

cpu_khz is only available (so far) if the TSC or HPET time sources are used,
and not when the PIT time source is used. So the scheduler tweak should have 
some sort of fall-back mechanism anyway, IMHO.

As for the bogomips question: I see different bogomips values for 
	tsc (~1.200)
	pit (~600) 
and	pmtmr (~8)
on my 600 MHz PIII Coppermine.

Well, in smp_tune_scheduling() we initialize some scheduler tunables
based on cpu_khz, but in those cases we have safe fallbacks. cpu_khz not
being initialized is a somewhat minor issue. 

The big issue is sched_clock() was written to only support the TSC (and
to fall back to jiffies if cpu_has_tsc was false or we were using a
CONFIG_NUMA compiled kernel).  

The problem is however that it uses functions from the TSC timesource to
convert cycles to nsecs. Those functions do not work unless the TSC is
being used as a timesource. That is why the ACPI PM and PIT were having
problems (likely cyclone as well). 

Thomas' patch to only use the TSC if the TSC timesource is being used
fixes the issue. I'm playing with a patch that may help systems using
other time sources, but needs more testing.

The Cyclone timesource also initializes cpu_khz, and I sent out a patch
that made it share the initialization code w/ the ACPI PM time source.

But you're correct, there are proper fallbacks for the PIT case where
cpu_khz isn't calibrated.

BogoMIPS is just based on loops_per_jiffy, which is calculated in
calibrate_delay(). Its name is deceiving and the output is just
cosmetic. Probably should be changed, but its historical, so I'm
hesitant. 

However, the both the pit and pmtmr should be using a very similar loop
delay function which should result in the same BogoMIPS value. I'll look
into it.

Terrible interactivity with 2.6.0-t9-mm3

I just noticed major interactivity problems whilst ogging one of my
cds. X (which is running at a nice of 0) stuttered in its display
uptdates (eg: ogging on two seperate machines but displaying on one, 
the progress display of the much faster box would come in spurts until
I ^z the ogg on the box running X). Keyboard input also stutters
and the nfs connection (over which I was encoding from the X running
box) eventually gave up the ghost and I got lots of 'server not
responding, timed out' msgs.

Playing Heroes3 was also impossible until I ran it under nice -n 1.

Doh. :/ This is the first time this has been so bad that I've felt
it was worth writing about. :/

Systems:

X: P3-700 with 256MB RAM, half of it free running Debian sarge (libc
   2.3.2 and X 4.2.1.1) and 2.6.0-t9-mm3.
SSH: Athlon XP 2500+ with 512MB of RAM with all but 46MB free running
     the same version of Debian but with 2.6.0-t9-mm2.

Yup, I was using a patched mm3 so I wanted to try the plain one, but due 
to your post, I can conclude it really is mm3 which is really bad. I 
noticed this as well. Using Nick's CPU scheduler things are not thaaat 
bad, but still far from mm2. I think there is some major problem 
introduced to mm3. Without Nicks patch doing an emerge/compiling, even 
my mouse heavily stutters like hell, regradless of the used io 
scheduler. With Nick's patch the mouse is rather OK, but the rest if the 
system is still not really usable. It is not a HD problem...

Going back to mm2 (patched mm2) and everything it fine again.

I can't do much testing atm but the similar symptoms happen whilst running
Heroes3 which tends to suck CPU so I think mp3 encoding would work just 
aswell or anything else that sucks all the CPU it can.

Prakash also reported similar problems whilst compiling the kernel. This is
something I can duplicate also. As my kernel compiles the system can't
even keep up with my typing.

I have tried both a) and b) with b) not changing anything, but a) seems

In defense of this code, I ran -mm3 with the deadline elevator for 
about 3 days and was very happy with the interactivity.  Now I've 
been running with the elevator=cfq for most of the day, and it also 
seems to be pretty responsive.  The default as wasn't, at least for 
-mm2, and I haven't tried it yet for -mm3.  Should I, and report back 
in a day or so so that you've got reports from an otherwise identical 
system to compare?

We need a test suite for this :)

I think you might have confused Andrew a bit more ;)

To start with, you are talking about IO schedulers, while the thread
is about CPU interactivity.

The problem here looks like something that is caused by something in mm3,
not in mm2, not linus.patch, and not context-switch-accounting-fix.patch.


Off topic: it would be good if you could try the as disk scheduler in mm3.
I recall you had some problems with it earlier, but they should be fixed in
mm3. Thanks.

I wasn't aware that such performance issues were divorced.  In my 
admitted limited view, a laggy mouse is a laggy mouse, and its due to 
irq latency in achieving the context switch to service the mouses 
data.  To me, its sorta like 2=2. :)

Ok Nick.  I'll reboot tomorrow without the elevator argument.  Right 
now, amanda is fixin to be fired off in about 25 minutes and I want 
to see how badly its estimate phase hogs the machine using the cfq 
scheduler.  With the -mm2 as, it was almost psychedelic to watch the 
mouse move.

Also off topic re mouse performance, and I expect this is an X issue, 
but when its been blanked because I'm typing, it takes about a full 
seconds worth of hand waving before it becomes visible again.  This 
is an X issue and I should go away, right?

I guess its mostly due to scheduling latency. I think IRQ latency is
generally very good these days.

Scheduling latency caused not by long critical sections in the kernel,
but having things scheduled in front of you (X) for a long time.

OK thanks. I think this problem you were seeing _was_ interrupt latency
due to AS doing millions of WARNs. It should be fixed in mm3.
