I'm strongly tempted to buy one of these laptops -- but I want it to run
Linux instead of that "other" operating system. Has anyone installed
Linux (32- or 64-bit) on one of these machines?

Or does anyone have a suggestion for a "Linux certified" Athlon 64 system?

There are some problems with ACPI, APIC and CPUFREQ, plus I do not
think build-in wifi can be made to work.

Otherwise its a nice machine ;-).
