Aiiee...

You know, mcdx.c is like a roadkill - just can't stop looking at the thing.

a) it doesn't initialize when non-modular.  Since 2.5.0.  Fixed, can send.
b) it leaks on failure exits; since forever.  Fixed, can send.
c) it has several lovely bugs (e.g. foo = bar | SINGLE ? ... : ..., where
SINGLE is defined as 1; from the context it's obvious that it should've
been bar & SINGLE; there since 1.3.71).  Fixed, can send.
d) it has tons of crimes against decency - e.g.
	foo = bar > (foo += baz) ? bar : foo;
where foo, bar and baz and fairly long expressions.  Partially fixed, can send.
Oh, and let's not forget the lovely variable names - e.g. "stuffp" through
the entire thing.  That's "pointer to all stuff we have about that device".

e) it does *entire* *damn* *IO* without dropping queue lock.  And yes, it
*does* block in there.  A lot.  Always had.

I can fix the last one, however at that point I'm really starting to wonder
if we want to keep the FPOS in the tree.  I don't have the hardware and while
I'm reasonably sure that I can split the transition into provably correct
small steps, I doubt that there's any point in doing that.  Driver is obviously
not used by anyone and hadn't been used for years.

The same goes for the rest of drivers/cdrom - cdrom.c is used, all right
(ide-cd, sr, pcd), but everything else is
	* abandoned by maintainers 5-6 years ago
	* broken
	* obviously not used by anybody
	* impossible to debug due to lack of hardware
	* fucking ugly

How about removing all that stuff instead of keeping the known broken shit
in the tree?  If somebody wants it back, they can always pick the versions
circa 2.6.0 from archives.

If you are OK with that (and nobody on l-k stands up and claims that they want
it alive and *claims* *that* *right* *fucking* *NOW*) I'll send you a patch
putting these buggers out of their misery.

You should try sbpcd.c. I very enthousiastically opened that up one day, 
thinking it might be a nice little newbie project, then after 30 seconds 
gently closed it again and logged out and in of X to make very sure all 
traces of the terminal that showed it were gone.

But...

I do actually still use two of these drives. An actual soundblaster 
connected "sbpcd" drive (which sits in a 386, and given the fact that 
the new init-module-tools didn't compile against libc5 I haven't tested 
it modular there yet -- builtin it doesn't work) and a "Pro Audio 
Spectrum" connected "cdu31a" which does work. Most of the time. When the 
timing is just right, it even allows me to mount cd-roms:

cdrom                  34112  1 cdu31a
root@5vd5:~# mount | grep cdrom

Hope this qualifies a bit. Must say that one of the things I appreciate 
about Linux is that all this old gunk I have lying about (in fact, still 
drag in from time to time) is actually supported. Or "supported".

Would it be good to have a CONFIG_LEGACY alongside CONFIG_EXPERIMENTAL 
and friends and dump all this crap into drivers/legacy/cdrom, where it 
wouldn't distract serious people?

OK...  So we have
	* potentially faulty mcdx (2.4, apparently either driver corrupts
memory in some conditions or isofs does the same for some IO failures -
need to take a look at that report more carefully).
	* cdu31a (FUBAR driver, nasty to fix, "most of the time" works on
2.6)
	* sbpcd (at least two, both untested with 2.6)

	Is anybody willing to fix those drivers?  'Cause I'm _not_ taking
sbpcd.c, thank you very much - I've played with it for a while, but this
sucker is a testing nightmare.  It is a bunch of drivers for different
models mostly ifdefed together.  Take problems with Becker's netdev drivers,
multiply by plenty and add the fact that while Becker definitely knows C,
sbpcd author doesn't.  floppy.c is cleaner than that beast; come to think
of that, so are toilets on most of the bus stations.

	cdu31a, BTW, still uses cli(), schedules under queue lock and uses
timers in very interesting way.  And that's just from the first look...

Okay, with a trivial hack to have the thing initialise when builtin, 
sbpcd does pretend to work:

3y25:~$ uname -r
2.6.5
3y25:~$ mount | grep cdrom

However, any "cp" from cd-rom oopses the box.

I was actually planning to get around to that at some point. Somewhat 
fond of this drive. As you say, driver is a disaster area; a few trivial 
fixes are not what it wants and at this point, fixing it properly would 
not be a trivial undertaking for me. Am also currently very busy 
elsewhere. Could it be kept around a bit?

oopses in driver, oopses by triggering BUG() or oopses in fs/*?  The last
two would be more interesting - isofs _MUST_ be able to survive any IO
errors, simply because CDs get scratched, etc. and that shouldn't crash
the box.

Free advice: if you want to handle that one, fork off the bits you really
need.  Keeping the drivers for all variants together simply doesn't pay,
and even the excuse of keeping the development in single codebase doesn't
apply anymore for what, 7 years?

Doesn't actually look all driver. The CD is good; works fine in this 
same drive with its own 2.0 kernel (and on other drives). Please note, 
this is a 386. Memory is good. dmesg and .config attached.

Very long crash, but in case it's helpful. Happens when copying anything 
from the sbpcd CD-ROM. In between the "do_exit, do_divide_error, 
do_page_fault, do_page_fault" oopses it seems to be attempting to give 
me back a prompt (it's not succeeding).

Looks like the driver seriously broke the request list, and that in turn 
corrupted memory. So the oopses are totally independent of the real bug.

Most likely a scrogged conversion to the new request handling.

Almost certainly a driver-induced memory corruption.

What about marking them as BROKEN in Kconfig and wait how many people 
scream they are still successfully using such drives in 2.6?
