This compiled, but failed anyway (after make mrproper):

  LD      vmlinux
  SYSMAP  System.map
  SYSMAP  .tmp_System.map
Inconsistent kallsyms data, try setting CONFIG_KALLSYMS_EXTRA_PASS
make: *** [vmlinux] Error 1
