Hi all,

Sorry for sending this issue to your attention again, but I got no answers and
I thought it could be because of my bad subject message.

I'm having little hangs while booting with kernels 2.6.12 and 2.6.13-rc1, rc2
and rc3.

Hangs appears just before mounting filesystems message and before configuring
system to use udev.

I'm using Gentoo with vanilla-sources. I already asked on gentoo lists and
nobody saw this behaviour. I tried google with no luck too. So my last
resource which could give me some light is here.

Do you know of something about this? Have you seen this problem?
Where could I look for more information about that in my system? I saw logs
but they don't say anything. Also, besides this hangs on boot, system seems to
work perfectly, but I'd like to remove this hangs from boot.

I don't know if this will help, but there were issues raised earlier
about older versions of udev causing hangs on newer kernels. Look for
the thread with the subject "2.6.12 udev hangs at boot". Actually,
look here: http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-kernel&m=111909806104523&w=2

Basically, upgrade to a newer udev if you're running an older one (I
think I had 0.30 at the time; installing 0.58 sped things up
noticeably).

Thanks!

Indeed udev update solved my problem with "preparing system to use udev"
hang. It now works like a charm. I had 030 version too.

Only the "mounting filesystem" hangs persists :(

May it have something about I have reiserfs 3.6 as my main filesystem?

I think it may be some type of configuration or update too.

Hi Andrew.
I was not able to get anything when I press this key sequence.

I checked my sysrq key with showkey -s as this doc
(http://snafu.freedom.org/linux2.2/docs/sysrq.txt) says and I could
confirm that alt+sysrq is sending 0x54.

I also noted that many said that this option has to be compiled in
kernel, but I couldn't find this option.

Can you give me some tips?

hm, maybe do alt-sysrq-7 to make sure that the loglevel is appropriately set.

Or do alt-sysrq-B to test that the whole sysrq thing is working.  If it is,
that will reboot the machine.

Hi Andrew. No luck here :(

Indeed my laptop has two keys: Sysrq and prtScrn. I tried both and no
one worked. Am I missing something? I will do more research about it.

compiling my kernel :(

running.  Yes, it takes a long time.

What makes you think this isn't normal behaviour?  Do other kernels behave
differently with the same userspace setup?

That's the point. On kernel 2.6.11 on same box I have no delay. It is
instantaneous. On 2.6.12-rc1 it was instantaneous but I didn't use it
much because I had drm problems. Later I tried 2.6.12 final and it was
hanging. I saw the "seeing a minute plugs hangs" on 2.6.13-rc1 release
notes and thought this could be the problem, but I compiled it and tried
with no luck :(

Now, I'm thinking it could be something like the udev hang which
disapeared with udev update to 058.

I don't know what can be happening. I think it is because of some type
of timeout.

If you think there is something else I can do, please let me know.

Greg said in another thread: "older versions of udev (< 058) can work
_really slow_ with 2.6.12.  Please upgrade your version of udev and see if
that solves the issue or not.".

What version are you running?   Looks like 058, yes?

Hm, odd.  Well, as this is a udev issue, care to try 064?  We've fixed a
lot of little bugs since 058 that might have caused this.

Hi all,

Denis Vlasenko called my attention to give more detais about my problem.

Sorry for that. :(

Unfortunately I don't know where I could get more info about this
problem as I get nothing about it in my logs. If you can give me
directions about where I can get more info I will do it.

For while, I'm sending my .config file for 2.6.13-rc3. I'm also sending
my dmesg for 2.6.11 which works and for 2.6.13-rc3 which hangs for a
while on boot.
