2.6.12? It looks more like your "original"/tico machine uses a 2.6.8.

I assume you use cdrecord-proDVD or something for writing DVD's.
According to Joerg Schilling cdrecord doesn't work 100% with all kernels
newer than 2.6.8 including your "rosetta" 2.6.11 kernel (which you used
for reading?) because for some reason.

I use reiser4 which seems to be available only for 2.6.9+ and have to
reboot to 2.6.8 to write DVD's. Even re-enabling ide-scsi didn't help.
With 2.6.12.3 cdrecord writes DVD's only with single speed here, if at all.
