Various fixes and cleanups, some new functionality notably Promise
20246/2026x support which although basic should get it going with disk.
Not 100% sure about ATAPI on PDC2026x yet.

I'm still scratching my head over that one. Its on the todo list.
Actually one thought - can you send me an lspci -vxx

Thanks

Dunno. For some odd reason libata still doesn't want to handle ATAPI
devices out-of-the-box. There's a boot/module option for it, though,
as well as this patch (attached).

UDMA support is there and was selected. Older chip revisions have
special handing for LBA48 (large disks/large requests) but I thought I
had that all sorted now so wouldn't expect such a hit.
Please send me an lspci -vxx
Thanks.

Thanks! Now I see the cdrom drive, albeit as /dev/sdb... (see other mail)

lspci -vxx and dmesg attached. I have disabled all under IDE menu, I'm running
only on libata now. With the patch from Mark Lord I can see the cdrom drive,
but as /dev/sdb, not /dev/sr0, and I have some messages like
ATA: abnormal status 0x58 on port 0x177
(see dmesg). Haven't tested much, but apart from the speed issue it seems
stable. hdparm -Tt says:
/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 1124 MB in 2.00 seconds = 561.57 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 8 MB in 3.76 seconds = 2.13 MB/sec

With this patch set and the attached config. Nvidia Nforce4 chipset
from asus A8N-E with pata and sata enabled (no ide drivers) I get the
following error i copied by hand (half assed) during bootup.
Process Swapper "lots of addresses"
Backtrace
ata_device_add+1183
RIP stext 2146431208 RSP ffff810002f41cb0
Bad RIP value
Kernel Panic - Not Syncing ... Tried to kill INIT
I even tried the other patch that supposedly fixes the problem that
occurs when fixating discs by jeff Garzik and it doesn't change anything.

Thanks for all the reports on the oops on boot. I was able to duplicate
it and fix the dumb bug that caused it.

Hi Alan,
I just tested the patch on my desktop (VIA VT8233A) and on my notebook
(SiS 5513): it boots correctly and performance (hdparm -T) looks good.
With atapi_enable all optical drives are recognized; I didn't try
burning (I'm out of disks...), but I'll do the test if it's useful.
This is the desktop:

Hello Alan,
the latest patch has not solved the performance problems on my laptop's Ali
chipset. Just to let you know....
Thanks,
Francesco

With this patchset (ide2) i'm able to boot. I'm still unable to fixate
cds, however. Even with the patchset from Garzik that was posted
before. Though, with Garzik's patch, i recieve no errors in dmesg
output. Prior to Garzik's patch i recieved this error when fixating discs.
