It's as good a place as any - though putting something more
descriptive like "NFS server crash" might make it less likely to all
through the cracks..

This is a vanilla 2.6.15.4 is it? No extra patches?
I haven't tried to duplicate the problem yet (my test machine is busy)
but it is very hard to see this happening unless the 'lock_kernel'
lock stopped working.
It looks from the logs like there were two attempts to start the nfs
server, the first one simply failed, the second caused the oops. Is
that correct?
The reason the first attempt failed is that 'portmap' appear to not be
running.
The reason for the oops is the interesting one for me. I don't think
these is any extra information you can provide other than answers to
the above questions.
I'll try to reproduce it.
Thanks for the report.

Hi,
Firstly stupid me never saw the Bugzilla link first time through. This
is now logged under Bug 6172
This is a vanilla 2.6.15.4 kernel no patches.
Several attempt were made to start NFS with /etc/init.d/nfs start. I
understood this would start portmap. Am I wrong? Possibly my iptables
provented it. I have been experimenting with arno firewall.
Thanks for responding and sorry for logging twice.

You should be aware that bugzilla is not universally popular. I
hardly ever look at it myself and perfer to deal with issues simply in
the mailing list.

Thanks for that confirmation. It is always best to be sure.

The functions in /etc/init.d are very dependant on distribution. I
gather you are using RedHat, and I know nothing about redhat's init.d.
However I suspect a badly configured firewall could be an issue and
disabling the firewall before trying again would be a good idea.

Don't worry about that. Twice is much better than never. It is very
easy to ignore a second copy of a bug report (when you read
linux-kernel you have to get good at ignoring things:-)

Hi,
I don't know if you are the right person for this. If not, would you
please forward it to the right one? Thank you.
Recently my Linux box crashed in a bad way.
KDE/X stopped, and all consoles were receiving messages that processes
could not allocate memory (?). There were also CPU register dumps. I was
unable to capture the information, since no console would give me a
prompt. Every second, another process would report the error and give
CPU register dumps. Some that I remember were DCOP (for KDE), CUPS,
ices (streaming audio). I don't remember is there was an OOPS message
(I didn't know that I should look for one).
Below is some info that may or may not help. First are some messages
from /var/log/sys.log and second are some info from /proc/...
At the end are the results of ksymoops.
Thank you.
Thomas

Got an oops. First time in a long time, As soon as this happened just about
every process started oopsing at the exact same place. The "tainted" is bogus,
it comes from openafs.

Hi, this is an oops-file I "created" today.
Attached is the original version as found in /var/log/messages as well
as the ksymoops-ed version.
Hope, it helps. If you need further info, don't hesitate to contact me.
My machine is a Cyrix 6x68 166+; 96 MB RAM.

-k /proc/ksyms (default)
-l /proc/modules (default)
-o /lib/modules/2.4.4/ (default)
-m /boot/System.map-2.4.4 (default)
Warning: You did not tell me where to find symbol information. I will
assume that the log matches the kernel and modules that are running
right now and I'll use the default options above for symbol resolution.
If the current kernel and/or modules do not match the log, you can get
more accurate output by telling me the kernel version and where to find
map, modules, ksyms etc. ksymoops -h explains the options.
Warning (compare_maps): ksyms_base symbol __VERSIONED_SYMBOL(shmem_file_setup) not found in System.map. Ignoring ksyms_base entry

Hello,
[1.] One line summary of the problem:
Kernel OOPS. Machine hanged under heavy load.
[2.] Full description of the problem/report:
The computer that is handling our e-mail hanged with an OOPS from which I
recovered only the EIP.
[3.] Keywords (i.e., modules, networking, kernel):
networking, kernel
[4.] Kernel version (from /proc/version):
Linux version 2.4.3-pre4 (root@k) (gcc version egcs-2.91.66 19990314/Linux
(egcs-1.1.2 release)) #1 SMP Tue Mar 13 11:00:08 EET 2001
[5.] Output of Oops.. message (if applicable) with symbolic information
resolved (see Documentation/oops-tracing.txt)
This is all that I could save:
Unable to handle kernel paging request 86c90cc0
OOPS:000 CPU1: EIP=0010:[<c01f7d08>]
I could not get the stack trace. Next-time I'll log the message on a serial
console.
If I read from System.map the address is between:
00000000c01f7b98 T tcp_v4_rcv
00000000c01f81b0 t __tcp_v4_rehash
[6.] A small shell script or example program which triggers the
problem (if possible)
[7.] Environment
[7.1.] Software (add the output of the ver_linux script here)

I was told that you might be able to tell me what is going wrong.
I am running RH 7 with Apache/1.3.12 and Samba Version 2.0.7
Thanks Sherm
The system crashes while the CPU is doing hardly anything and crashes
often.
Here are the logs.

Hello,
I recent found an oops on one of our machines. Ignorant of the
oops-tracing.txt instructions included with the kernel, I rebooted the
offending machine without hesitation. Here is the oops text and output
from ksymoops. ksymoops was run after the restart, so I don't know if
it's output will be helpful. I don't know much about C or kernel
development, but I will provide any other information about my system you
may reqire.
Kind regards,
Bill Triplett
