Hi.
I'm having problems with a SATA drive on an ASUS A8V deluxe
motherboard under kernel 2.6.17... In fact it's happened under
every (Vanilla) kernel I've ever run on this server (Back to 2.6.14).
(It's just over a year old. It didn't used to experience the same load
as it does now, so I'm currently assuming it's load related...
The box is a 3GB memory, Barton core AMD64 3200+, with a 30GB IDE (IDE0),
160GB IDE (IDE1) and a 200GB SATA drive.
After anywhere between a few minutes (Rare) and several hundred hours
of uptime, access to filesystems on the SATA drive stop in mid flow
(Almost always under light to heavy load. e.g. watching mythtv from
a saved .mpg on a reiserfs filesystem on an LVM2 volume).
I've tried the SATA drive on two different SATA ports as well. ata0 & ata1.
dmesg shows the following output
ata1: translated ATA stat/err 0x51/84 to SCSI SK/ASC/ASCQ 0xb/47/00
ata1: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }

I can't find anything on google... There's no suspend/resume involved. It doesn't appear to be over heating, CPU is at 38degC currently, it was stable as a rock during the heatwave last week at about 50degC, so plenty of leeway there. 1st temp sensor is at 33 degC (According to sensors).
Scaling governor is set to ondemand...
When it fails, sdparm also hangs, but when it's running, sdparm doesn't indicate any logged errors, so it doesn't seem like it's the drive failing...
Othe rinfo follows...

I think I've hit something similar yesterday, with 2.6.17.1...
It's happened just after I've hit "Enter" to log in with KDM (--> KDE),
other services were starting in background (network, spamassassin) -->
high disk load.
I don't remember the exact messages but I'm pretty sure that every disk
access failed.
After a brutal reboot (Alt + SysRq + B) I've got these problems very
early (when ext3 was trying (and failing) to replay journal).
I was already thinking about an hardware failure, then I've tried
powering off/on and voilà... everything worked again.
I don't know much more because it's happened just once, and maybe it was
just a temporary hardware failure.
Anyway...

I was thinking that I've recently enabled CONFIG_PREEMPT (usually I
was just using CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY).
Maybe is totally unrelated but... for Hamish: what is/was your PREEMPT
config?

Hmm...
damned stats # gzip -dc /proc/config.gz |grep -i preempt
# CONFIG_PREEMPT_NONE is not set
# CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY is not set
CONFIG_PREEMPT=y
CONFIG_PREEMPT_BKL=y
CONFIG_DEBUG_PREEMPT=y
damned stats #
I also tried 2.6.17-mm but that dies in reiserfs claiming a bug in bitmap.c
I'll try a re-compile of 2.7.17.1 vanilla with no pre-empt & see how it goes.

Simply give a try at disabling irqbalance service... This solved all of
my problems (jerky mouse, lan dropping, etc..) with the exception of
ATAPI over SATA which actually got fixed in 2.6.17.
Hope this helps!

It happened again 2 times here, then I've opened the case and done a
"cleanup". I've also switched the power cable of the disk.
After that it isn't happened anymore.
When it happened I think I've heard a small "beep", like a small power
"failure" that made it powering off/on in a fraction of second.
(Is that plausible?)
So maybe mine was an "hardware" problem followed by the software unable
to get the disk to behave correctly... or something.
Another interesting thing is that the disk preserves his state of
brokenness across a reboot... I need a full power OFF/ON to get it back.
I hope to never see this again :)

Well, I turned off pre-empt, and haven't struck a problem since in almost a
week.

# for Jeff (in case you haven't read the other mails on the list): I've
possibly seen the same problem but I'm not sure.
Disabling preemtion seems to have fixed the problem for hamish, while I
haven't seen it anymore after a "cleanup":
http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/6/28/333
# for Hamish: I suggest to keep running without preemption and maybe to
load the machine on purpose. If it survive for another week then
reenable preemption and see how it goes.
But maybe Jeff has some other suggestions :)

I think I found it...
I upgraded to a new MB, amd64 X2 4200 and a new Gfx card. The problem got much
much worse. Then it started to hang on boot in the BIOS checks for HD's...
Turns out it was the cable... Unplugging the drive from the MB fixed it,
plugging it back in worked for a bit & died again.
I changed the cable and haven't had a problem for a week now.
TIA
Hamish.
