Hi,
With 2.6.23.1 (stock and Fedora), roughly 50% of the time my system
hangs indefinitely during the kernel boot process. The hangs occur in
places where normally a brief delay is seen, such as when detecting
serial ports, ATA devices, and USB hubs. SysRq+W, when it works, shows
tasks stuck inside schedule_timeout and lock_timer_base.
I've found, however, that if I override the default "tsc" clocksource
with "acpi_pm" by adding "clocksource=acpi_pm" to the kernel command
line, the system comes up fine every time. (Zero hangs in ~50 tries.)
I never had to do this with stock kernels based on 2.6.22.10 and
earlier, which also defaulted to "tsc" on my system.
I came across this thread:

but I'm not sure if it's the same issue. I've never seen a "Clocksource
tsc unstable" message, and the kernel doesn't appear to unwedge itself
after 5 minutes (I waited 20 minutes once).
Any ideas?

Same problem with 2.6.23.8.
Are there any specific (TSC related?) patches I should try reverting?
Would it help if I captured the dmesg/SysRq output from one of the
hanging boots?
Any other information that might be useful in getting to the bottom of this?

Hi all,
Please ignore the previous patch with the same subject.
It has a bug that can manifest itself in the very exotic case
when each do {} while() iteration executes on different cpu
leading to potentially infinite loop.
This is a patch based on the Ingo's idea/patch to track
delay_tsc() migration to another cpu by comparing
smp_processor_id(). It is against kernel-2.6.24-rc3.
What is different:
1. Using unsigned (instead of long) to unify for i386/x86_64.
2. Minimal preempt_disable/enable() critical sections
(more room for preemption)
3. some statements have been rearranged, to account for
possible under/overflow of left/TSC
Tested on both: 32/64 bit SMP PREEMPT kernel-2.6.24-rc3

I backported that patch to 2.6.23.8, but it didn't make a difference.
I also went ahead and tested 2.6.24-rc3 (with no changes to the existing
config settings):
With the new CPU_IDLE option set to "n", it still hangs, but much less
frequently than on 2.6.23.x. In 25 tries, there were 3 hangs, all after
"input: AT Translated Set 2 keyboard as /class/input/input0".
With CPU_IDLE set to "y", it didn't hang at all in 25 tries. However,
CPU_IDLE=y produces these additional messages, which may explain why:
Marking TSC unstable due to: TSC halts in idle.
...
Time: acpi_pm clocksource has been installed.
Not sure what else to try at this point...
