error building Linus tree

Building Linus tree with gcc 4.1.1 on an x86_64 system based on RHEL 5
I run into the following error:

This is my gcc information, attached is the .config I use

Using built-in specs.

You need to use gcc-4.1.2 or later to correctly compile the kernel.

OK, thanks, I'll upgrade the system to newer gcc. Is this limitation being
around for long time?
