1. instroduce nr_cpus=x, to enumlate that only one x cpus are installed
2. nur nr_cpu_ids for checking
3. make default_setup_irq_routing of 32but more like 64 bit
4. amd cpu useing logical flat even one of 8 scpu apicid >= 8
5. use dmi table to decide if we need to disabled cpus as hotplug cpus.

need to apply after putting Suresh patch back.

todo:
1. seperate probe_32.c to probe_32.c and apic_default_32.c
2. merge probe_32.c and probe_64.c or create probe.c to share dmi table

Thanks

Yinghai Lu

on x86, before prefill_possible_map(), nr_cpu_ids will be NR_CPUS aka CONFIG_NR_CPUS

add nr_cpus= to set nr_cpu_ids. so we can simulate cpus <=8 are installed on
normal config.

-v2: accordging to Christoph, acpi_numa_init should use nr_cpu_ids in stead of
     NR_CPUS.

not sure it works again, could be bios fix the irq routing dest ?

tested that amd support logical flat too when cpus num <= 8 and even
bsp apic id > 8

so could remove vendor check...

should use nr_cpu_ids instead of num_processor, in case we have hotplug cpus.

if current only have 8 cpus is up, but if we will have more cpus that
will be hot added later, we should use physical flat at first.

nr_cpu_ids is the total cpus that could be supported.

-v2: per linus, chenage default_setup_apic_routing to _init, and call it for uni_processor

some systems that have disable cpus entries because same
BIOS will support 2 sockets and 4 sockets and more at
same time, BIOS just leave some disable entries, but
those system do not support cpu hotplug. we don't need
  treat disabled_cpus as hotplug cpus.
so we can make nr_cpu_ids smaller and save more space
(pcpu data allocations), and could make some systems run
with logical flat instead of physical flat apic mode

-v2: change to black list instead

kill def_to_bigsmp
and move switch from default to bigsmp at default_setup_apic_routing...
so make default_setup_apic_routing more like 64 bit
also make the dmi relate code to be __init/__initdata

I don't think this list will work because every HT system with HT
disabled in the bios shows that logical cpu as disabled.

so you want to treat those disabled cpus in the those system as hotplug cpus or not?

They are really not hot plug cpus, so they can also take advantage of
what you are trying to provide with this patch.

Also I am very confused with what exactly you are doing with the dmi
list..

+        printk(KERN_NOTICE "%s detected: treat disabled cpus as hotplug ones\n", d->ident);
+        treat_disabled_cpus_as_hotplug = 0;

???

you mean this blacklist could be too long?

switch to whitelist for the box can treat disabled cpus as hotplug cpus?

Do we really need all this? Systems which support physical hotplug
typically have lot's of cpu's (mostly will have atleast > 8). Even if we
really need to identify, then perhaps we can check if ACPI has any hints
regarding the physical hotplug support at boot time (we should check
with Andi Kleen or Len Brown on this).

For now, I think we can keep it simple by using the detected enabled
cpu's.

Well, I was referring more to the apic model selection than the prefill
case. About this possible cpu's, will the wastage be more than few kb
for few disabled cpu's.

for 8 sockets systems if only have two cpus instatalled.

that disabled cpus will be 6 * 8 * 2 = 96.

and per_cpu area is about per cpu 2M, so will waste about 96 x 2M

Why not? It's not that a hotplug cpu is particularly expensive.
It's just a bunch of memory and not even very much of it.

White and blacklists just to save a small amount of memory
seem like a bad idea.

There are configurations in which percpu memory is in the megabytes.
This is exactly why we need high water mark allocation of percpu memory:
for configurations where there are possible hotpluggable CPU sockets
(which may be virtual, and a lot larger number than necessary) we
shouldn't need to allocate memory for a processor which has never been
added and is net unlikely to ever be added. The only alternative is to
go to great length to keep the
(percpu memory) x (possible cpus - actual cpus) product as small as
possible, which is shortchanging the utility of the percpu memory system.

There used to be some like this (with some broken debug code), but they
got all fixed i believe to only allocate on real cpu hotplug.

If not the right way is to fix them, not add DMI blacklists.

Beside when you enable debug code you probably don't care about
a few MB too much.

No we just need to fix any percpu pigs (if there are really any left,
I did a couple of patches some time ago)

Well, that *is* working around broken code, in this case the broken code
is the percpu allocation strategy.

Andi, Recently percpu folks changed the per-cpu static first chunk to
PMD SIZE right. I think that is what causing all this issue.

thanks,
suresh

Please don't tell me we're allocating 2 MB per CPU and throwing away
most of it...

Looking at the percpu code, they do seem to free the unused memory in
that hole.

Yinghai, what are the configurations that need MB's of per cpu area?

thanks,
suresh

I just built an allyesconfig kernel, and it has 1904K of percpu data.
1791K of that is in per_cpu__cpu_lock_stats. So everything else is
~113K. Still. We should not be restricted from doing legitimately
large percpu allocations because of ghost cpus (and Tejun knows my
position on this), but it doesn't sound like the house is burning, either.

Ok so we need to fix lock stats, I'll put it on my todo list.

I think it's legitimate to require explicit allocation on
add/remove event for anything large.

Static per cpu is really only for "lazy users" anyways.

I took a look at alloc_percpu() at least and it seems to always
allocate for all possible cpus.

Unfortunately we don't have a nice accounting mechanism for it in /proc,
perhaps we should. So it's unclear right now if that is a problem or not.
