At first I thought it was just over-reaction to the file being missing, but
looking at the WARN_ON, it appears that we're trying to invoke the firmware
loader before userspace is back up ?

In this (and probably other related) kernel, CONFIG_FW_LOADER_USER_HELPER is unset,
in case that matters at all.

If it's the case where no matching firmware file is present, the patch
below might help.  It's only compile-tested.

in the resume path, resulting in a warning.  For the success paths,
calling request_firmware() is fine, as it's cached properly at
suspend.  The problem is only for the error paths.

the hdev->setup callback is only called once for each new device found. This means that setting it back to NULL from the its own handler is not making any difference.

Also the problem is that hdev->setup is really there to load firmware. Devices might work without the firmware, but then they run off an old ROM firmware which is not a good idea in most cases. So we can not just close our eyes and hope for the best. The firmware should really be loaded.

I think the problem is that the devices physically disappear from the USB bus during suspend and will show up as a newly attached device after resume. So we have the cold plug case here. And there we need to firmware. Plain and simple. As stated above hdev->setup is only after run once. The only way to run it a second time is by unplugging and replugging the device. A BIOS that takes the power of the Bluetooth USB device is essentially simulating this behavior.

We are seeing a hci_power_on call since that is triggered exactly once when the device is plugged in. If we wanted to be super smart, then we could delay that initial call until the first userspace opens any Bluetooth socket. In theory that would work, but could be also way to complicated to realized. However it would mean the initial firmware loading and setup of the device is delayed until bluetoothd has been started. For bluetoothd this will be not a problem since it can handle hotplug of Bluetooth controllers, but for all other command line tools it might be a real problem.

Actually, there are a few other issues behind the scene:

- This warning happens only when the firmware loading fails.
  If the firmware was successfully loaded *before* suspend, the f/w
  loader retries to load the firmware and cache it at suspend and use
  it at resume in return.

- The usermodehelper_read_trylock() should be blocked at resume, but
  by some reason it didn't work.
  I thought I closed the race in the commit 4320f6b1d9db, but it seems
  incomplete or yet buggy.  Hmm..

In order to paper over this, we may also remember the failing firmware
and avoid loading it.  This might be an easer way than the endless
fight against UMH race...

Hi,

the full fix would be to implement reset_resume() for btusb.
It seems to me that setup() should be split in two methods,
one to request the firmware from user space and the second
to transfer it to the device. reset_resume() would just need
to repeat the second operation.

I'm not against it, but one slight drawback is that you'll have to
remember the firmware content to transfer by the driver itself in this
scenario.   In the firmware loader framework, the content is re-read
at resume so that the largish content isn't kept unnecessarily during
the whole operation.

That isn't a drawback but an advantage. Firmware for devices that
do power management needs to be in RAM. The right time to free it
is in disconnect(). But why does that mean that the driver has to
manage the firmware? Can't the firmware layer do it?

You just cannot keep a device operational seamlessly if you request
firmware on resume. We could in theory use a notification queue
running while user space is operational if you really want to save
a little RAM.

The f/w loader remembers the f/w names of the successful loads, and
retries to load them automatically at the suspend time.  But it
doesn't remember/cache the failed loads.  So, when the driver retires
request_firmware() for a non-existing file in the resume path, it
actually reaches to the f/w loading part again unexpectedly.

I think this should be indeed fixed. The firmware loader needs to remember the information. Since sometimes the firmware is optional. No point in re-loading it. And realistically, if the firmware was not present before suspend, it will not magically appear during resume.

Two issues

1. the firmware may be added later. So we could only record the name,
not the result of the query.
2. a driver may query several firmwares in turn to find its firmware

It seems to me that a firmware that will be needed again should
just not be evicted from RAM.

And that is probably a bug. We just cannot request a firmware during
resumption. On anything but a leave node it is potentially deadly.

It records only the name.  The content is cached only between suspend
and resume.  But this reminds me that it's also a problem when the
firmware file on disk is replaced after the driver is loaded.  Then
the firmware content differs from what the driver had.

Right, and this kind of behavior hits the problem.

Yes, that's what I mentioned in my reply.  But, actually more puzzling
is that the WARNING shouldn't have been triggered at all.  That is,
something is still racy there, so we'd need to fix it.

Of course, robustifying the firmware loader itself is another good
thing.

so when you do hci_register_dev, then hdev->setup is only called once. I really mean only once per lifetime of the hci_dev. So you would need to unregister the hci_dev first before hdev->setup will ever be called again. So I am not sure this is actually the problem here. The problem here is entirely within request_firmware() unless of course we run through the USB probe handlers again. Which I do not see happening here.

And we have hdev->setup this way since normally the Bluetooth devices keep their firmware patches and not forget about them and suspend-resume cycles. If the USB device of course jumps of the bus during it then all bets are off anyway.

Usually you can avoid unnecessary rebinding when you provide a proper
reset_resume callback.  I guess that's what Oliver suggested.

Yes, but even in reset_resume() you would need to redo the setup
part, as the device lost power. The basic problem of requesting
the firmware wouldn't be solved.

Requesting the firmware in the resume path itself is OK.  There are
many drivers doing so.  But the primary problem in btusb is that it's
triggered at the wrong timing.  (And the second problem is that the
firmware loader doesn't cache the non-existing files, so it goes
through lengthy code paths for reconfirming that the file doesn't
exist.)

So, below is a quick hack for avoiding the f/w loader activation
during resume.  I just compile-tested, so no idea whether it really
works or not.

It seems most likely to me that probing is indeed done again.
btusb does not implement reset_resume(). If power goes away
as is usual on S3/4 the device is reenumerated. The original
trace has a call to btusb_setup_bcm_patchram().
What else could be happening?

If btusb driver is loaded in initrd, you'd need the corresponding
firmware in initrd, too.

The driver is built into the kernel and I don't use an initrd. I could
probably create one, but it's a bit tricky with UEFI and a tad harder
to maintain.

huh? The whole idea of the firmware API was to keep (often proprietary) 
firmware out of the kernel. Has that strategy been abandoned recently?

See CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMARE.  It doesn't mean to include the binary blob
into the kernel source tree.  It just allows to *build* into your
kernel.

I see. Thanks for the info. I still do not understand the resume 
scenario. I though firmware api did some sort of caching of the firmware 
images.

My theory is that this is triggered when the firmware file doesn't
exist.  Then it's neither remembered nor cached, so it's retried in
the resume path.  But the information is missing, so I cannot say
surely about it.

Agree. So the same warning should have occurred upon system boot. Maybe

So I looked at this Kconfig option and reading the help I came across 
this warning:

WARNING: If you include additional firmware files into your binary 
kernel image that are not available under the terms of the GPL, 
then it may be a violation of the GPL to distribute the resulting 
image since it combines both GPL and non-GPL work. You should 
consult a lawyer of your own before distributing such an image.
"""

This is exactly what I meant, by "(often proprietary) firmware". So we 
should conclude that if a device needs proprietary firmware it can not 
be built-in the kernel if intended for distribution.

Well, that's why I've repeatedly written it's for *building* the
kernel.  Building a kernel in such a way and using it is no problem.
The problem happens only when you distribute it.  So, this doesn't
apply to the distro kernels, of course.  Think separately between
build and distribution.

In Michai's case, he's certainly building the kernel manually (that's
why btusb is built-in, which usually isn't so on distro kernels).
