You know the drill.
git trees, patches, tar-balls, you name it. I've still not made a shortlog
script, and right now I'm too tired to generate the shortlog from the full
log, so you can either find it all in the git archives, or just parse down
the full log in ChangeLog-2.6.12-rc4 to a more manageable format.
Both the full log and the diffstat are too big for the mailing list to
accept, so I'll not spam your mailboxes.
But you could just use gitweb, in case you haven't noticed already. So
point your browsers at http://www.kernel.org/git and see what you find out
that way.
What's changed? ia64, arm, UML, ppc64, jfs, cifs updates. And drivers. And
tons of small stuff all over.
Me, I'm off for a week of vacationing. Flee the country, like I usually do
after releases. Leave you suckers^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hgentle people to test it
all out.

IRQ14 in 2.6.12-rc3 is assigned to ide0. This is a Intel ICH5 controller with just a hard drive as primary master and a CDROM drive as primary slave. I browsed the rc3-rc4 diff, but couldn't find anything really obvious, and it is a big diff to look in more detail. Well, I've dug deeper now. It seems that having "acpi=ht" disables acpi in 2.6.12-rc4, but not on 2.6.12-rc3. Looking at the code it seems that it should have been disabled even on 2.6.12-rc3. I've attached the dmesg from 2.6.12-rc3, 2.6.12-rc4 with "acpi=ht" (which fails to boot) and 2.6.12-rc4 without any "acpi=" on the command line. It seems to be running smoothly now. I know now that I shouldn't have used "acpi=ht", but why did it work on previous kernels? Even more, the kernel with "acpi=ht" seems out of control, like it has some memory overwrite problems. This is a known bug that the attached patch by Sam Ravnborg fixes. I really don't know if this is the proper fix or not. Maybe Sam (CC'ed) can say better if this is more of a band aid or the correct solution. Note that this is only a problem because the change in position makes the compression algorithm produce a different result, with a different size. The algorithm doesn't use all the symbols to optimize the token table, but instead it samples 1024 symbols to speed up the calculations. In one case "__down" is the lucky sample, in the other it is "__sched_text_start". Given that my symbol table has 11300 symbols, there is a ~2/11 probability of being hit by this bug. The larger the symbol table the less likely it is to happen. If the token table would be kept from the first to the second pass, not only it would be faster, but also changing a symbol position would not give inconsistent results, because the resulting size would be the same.
