Hi,

I'm not sure if a similar patch has been submitted or not, but here is a
patch to get DMA working on ASUS K8S-MX with a SiS 760GX/SiS 965L
chipset combo.

I'm looking at trying to revive the old sis190.c net driver for this
board too, this does depend on my boss giving me some development time.

Anyway, this is my first kernel patch so I hope it helps.

Regards
Andrew

If you don't mind scary crashes, you can take a look at:
http://www.fr.zoreil.com/people/francois/misc/sis190-000.patch

I have not been able to find a K8S-MX at the local retailers. It does
not help testing nor does it suggest that there is a strong need.

Unfortunately I have been lumbered with 5 of these (insert rude word
here) boards and have had problems with pretty much every driver. SATA
had to be download from SiS's website, PATA is as my patch (no idea why
a sis5513 driver wasn't coded to detect a sis5513). I used rev1.1 of
the sis190.c driver along with a guy from India, he says it works, I say
it doesn't (but it may be because my test network is 10Meg Half-Duplex).
Thank the heavens I am using this as a headless server, sound and
video are a nightmare as well apparently.

Many thanks for the link, boss is going on holiday next week so as long
as none of the servers melt down then I should be able to work on this.

Regards
Andrew

This patch is incorrect, it adds PCI ID of SiS IDE controller (this ID
is common for almost all SiS IDE controllers and is already present in
sis5513_pci_tbl[]) to the table of SiS Host PCI IDs. As a result driver
will try to use ATA_133 on all _unknown_ IDE controllers. You need
to add PCI ID of the Host chipset (lspci should reveal it) instead.

Thanks,
Bartlomiej

Unless I am reading the following wrong 5513 is the PCI ID:

00:02.5 Class 0101: 1039:5513 (rev 01) (prog-if 80 [Master])
	Subsystem: 1043:8139
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 128
	I/O ports at <unassigned>
	I/O ports at <unassigned>
	I/O ports at <unassigned>
	I/O ports at <unassigned>
	I/O ports at ffa0 [size=16]
Capabilities: [58] Power Management version 2

It is PCI ID of the IDE interface but you need PCI ID of the North Bridge.
The thing is that SiS is using the same PCI ID for all IDE controllers and
driver shouldn't be unconditionally programming all unknown/future SiS
IDE controllers as they may differ from the current ones.

Second look into sis5513.c and another problem turns out - patch breaks
support for IDE controllers integrated into 961 and 961B South Bridges
(ATA_133 is used instead of ATA_100 and ATA133a).

For unknown Host Bridges driver checks for presence of 961/961B/962/963
South Bridges by checking true device ID (please see sis5513.c for details)
and assigns 'chipset_family' accordingly (ATA_100/ATA_133a or ATA_133).

You have 965L South Bridge so probably it has newer true device ID
and may also require different programming sequence.

Ah, you see this is what happens when I enter the scary world of driver

I'm just installing another one of those boards now ready to go into our

Please find them attached, please also note I have disabled onboard LAN
and sound as they are currently not needed and aren't working with
current drivers anyway so probably aren't in these outputs. Let me know
if you want me to test anything as I still have 3 of these boards left
over the next 3 weeks to play with.

Patch of the day:

http://www.fr.zoreil.com/people/francois/misc/20050609-2.6.12-rc-sis190-test.patch

Apply against current 2.6.12-rc12

I'll be surprized if it works. I'll appreciate to know when and how it
breaks.

We have 2 boards in as production servers in Manchester now (we are
based in North Wales, about an hour and a half drive, or an hour if I am
driving) but I have 1 sitting on my workbench at work ready for the
kill, I'll build that today and try and kill it. I'll let you know what
happens.

Regards
Andrew

Tried it, it didn't detect the sis190 in this board so I changed the
PCI_ID lines to:
static struct pci_device_id sis190_pci_tbl[] __devinitdata = {
    { 0x1039, 0x0190, PCI_ANY_ID, PCI_ANY_ID, 0, 0, 0 },
    { 0,},
};
This then detected it but caused a soft lockup on modprobe with a dump
which I have attached here. I have also attched lspci -vvv and -xxx for
you.

FYI, I know the general spec for a sis190 is 1000MBit but the one on
this mobo is just a 10/100MBit

Regards
Andrew

Because your device definitely is not a 5513. 5513 is a very old chip
from the early pentium era and isn't produced anymore. SiS just didn't
bother to change the PCI IDs since then ...

That's why the driver does quite complex probing for the real type of
the chip.

/me scratches head

The figures look the same. I must be tired.

Right, there was a bug. I am not sure the fix will really fix though.

See the patch of the day:

http://www.fr.zoreil.com/people/francois/misc/20050610-2.6.12-rc-sis190-test.patch

Please add a dmesg as well if something goes wrong.

The driver enables nearly everything via the mii. With some luck it will
be enough to postpone the link management revamp until at least one (1)
packet has proceeded through the driver.

Thanks for your testing.

I thought so, but for some reason it makes a difference.

Something went wrong on build. Getting 'syntax error before '}' token'
on every line there is _msleep(1);

I have checked it again and the patch applies and compiles correctly
against 2.6.12-rc6. So does the updated patch of the day:

http://www.fr.zoreil.com/people/francois/misc/20050611-2.6.12-rc-sis190-test.patch

No need to use SIS190_NO_DELAY so far. The media negotiation process has
been changed. It is now allowed to take longer to complete (it should help).

dmesg and ifconfig output will be welcome.
