Read (devel) documentation about gimp-print, cups, ghostscript, most
probably you won't need to touch the kernel sources 8)

The Epson LX 300 runs the ESC/P protocol: Therefore I'd install
"ghostscript" (and maybe "magicfilter" or "apsfilter") and use the
"epson" device ghostscript offers.
Seems you don't have to write a driver.
