Yes, I red the relevant documentation but his problem is so easy to reproduce 
that there are no problems:
libc6 version: 2.3.6
Linux version: 2.6.20 (work with 2.6.20.1 also).
Problem:
make all ARCH=um fails always on linking: it seems that a -llibname is missing.
If this report is too stupid, sorry!
