Yeah, this is used by several projects and shouldn't cause any
trouble... It works under Arch Linux (pacman, which uses a version
comparison algorithm ripped off from RPM):
$ vercmp 1.2.17.0 1.2.18.0
-1
$ vercmp 1.2.18.0a1 1.2.18.0
-1

Works as well but looks kind of weird, imho:
$ vercmp 1.2.18.0.rc1 1.2.18.1
-1

Many distributions use hyphens for pkgrels/patches:
$ vercmp 1.2.18.0-a1 1.2.18.0
0
