I don't think it's forcedeth. forcedeth just happens to be the first
module that get's loaded in startup. It crashes with any other module
too (I tried ohci_hcd). 

To repeat myself: This might be the result of faulty config

It could be that some kobject on that list has become invalid (memory
was freed, module was unloaded, etc) and later code stumbled across the
now-invalid object on that list and then crashed.

What we can do to find this is to add a diagnostic each time an object
is registered, and a diagnostic each time kset_find_obj() looks at the
objects.  Then we'll see which kobject caused the crash, then we can
look back and see where that kobject was registered from.

Ok, below is my patch, I am not sure it could fix the BUG for you,
but it could fix the WARNING. But perhaps they are related.

It looks really odd that we do class_put() in non-failure path of
class_register(), shouldn't it be in class_unregister()?
In fact we have this problem long time ago, since commit 7c71448b,
but a recent change (commit 18d19c964) uncovers this.

It looks really odd that we do class_put() in non-failure path of
__class_register(). This seems wrong.

To fix this, just remove class_get() in __class_register(), we don't need
to call class_get() to get ref of cls->p->class_subsys, because
kset_register() has already done this for us.

So a kobject which was created under pcie_portdrv_init() caused an oops
much later when kset_find_obj() did strcmp(kobject_name(k), name)) on
that object.  Which tends to imply that someone freed that memory or
trashed kobj->name while that pcie kobject was on the list.

Greg, Jesse, Kay, could you take a look please?

I guess one thing we could do is to change that debug patch to print
kobj->name as well, see whether it changes.

M G, do you have all debug options enabled, especially the
memory-management ones?  Perhaps CONFIG_DEBUG_PAGEALLOC will pick
something up.

Could you please try to turn on DEBUG_KOBJECT and boot your kernel
with "initcall_debug"? And then show us your dmesg.

If I'm doing this (enabled CONFIG_DEBUG_KERNEL and
CONFIG_DEBUG_KOBJECT), the kernel dies immediately - no output.

Ouch!

CONFIG_DEBUG_KOBJECT will only enable some printk's, so I think
probably it's CONFIG_DEBUG_KERNEL which breaks your booting.

Could you please provide your .config?
