| Can you check that the message above is _really_ the output of your
| native kernel ? I have not checked gentoo's sources but the real vanilla
| kernel can not issue this string.
|

Sorry, my mistake... the output above was from a modprobe of the same
external module. I was confused because the kernel doesn't show like its
native module is present anyway, even when modprobed (as you can see
from the info you requested).

| You can send for both working/non-working after module insertion (wait
| for a few seconds):
| - complete dmesg (the beginning of it could be in /var/log/dmesg or such)

dmesg_native is the kernel's native r8169 module dmesg, while
dmesg_external is the external module dmesg provided by usr cd.

| - lspci -vx
| - lsmod
| - ifconfig -a
| - ethtool eth0
| - cat /proc/interrupts

All follow the same naming scheme as you can see from attached messages.
I noticed that the kernel totally ignores native module r8169, even if
it shows it as modprobed in lsmod. All logs were taken in two separate
reboots.

| - source code

Did you mean the source code of the external module? It's the
r8169_external.tar.gz file. Modinfo says it's GPL'ed, but I didn't find
any notice of it in the cdrom.

| - brand name of the motherboard

It's a Supermicro 370SDA which accepts pentium celeron and pentium III's
up to 1GHz (socket 370). There's a pIII 933 mounted on it.

| - the name given by USR to the adapter (check the box)

It's referred to as "High-Performance 10/100/1000Mbps Desktop/Server
Networking Model 7902". The part number is USR997902 "PCI NIC ASSEMBLED
IN CHINA IN 2004".

| I do not mind if the info is mailed, available on some web site or stuffed
| at bugzilla.kernel.org. Please Cc: netdev@oss.sgi.com on further messages.

Ehmm.... I'm not sure if I have to Cc: this message to
netdev@oss.sgi.com together with attached files... please say so if
needed. Oh, mind that I'm not subscribed to the linux-kernel mailing
list. Ciao!

TIA,
Tommy
