I think besides netdev@vger.kernel.org, you found the right place. I've
CCd them too in case anyone there has an idea. We can consider contacting
lkml later if we find that the problem isn't networking related.

you could also try using the pktgen kernel module that does just what
you've said, but doesn't use the stack at all. What packet size?

thanks for trying the standalone driver too, but lets just talk about the
in-kernel one for right now. BTW the PCIe controllers are significantly
faster.

myself and others will want to see your .config, and dmesg can you reply
with those attached? I'm suspecting the scheduler myself.

I'm guessing you're starting to poll (NAPI) more for some reason.

are you sure some memory manager debug didn't get turned on? A diff of
your previous config against the new config (or attach them both) might
be interesting.

This sounds a little bit like lock contention possibly on the skb_free
call in tx e1000_clean_tx_irq.

have you tried both kernels without hyperthreading? It usually doesn't
help with I/O workloads.

If you're willing and have the time you can try isolating when the problem
got introduced by first testing some of the 2.6.26-rcX kernels, then when
you have one of those where the problem goes away, try using git-bisect to
find your way down to the commit that introduced the problem.

e1000 shortlog between those two kernels shows no real changes that could
effect performance besides the irq_sem fix.

you can check /proc/net/softnet_stat output to see how much you're NAPI
polling during these tests. It looks like the interrupt rate is coming
down because you're polling in 26, but not in 25.

If you have the oprofile data, can you send me more details about the
hotspots with opannotate --assembly -p /path/to/e1000_source e1000

Hi Jesse,

Thanks for the prompt reply.

The payload size was set at 1470 bytes (to which I add the UDP, IP and
ethernet header sizes when computing the throughput).

Attached. The format is
CONFIG_VARIABLE: 2.6.25.10-value | 2.6.26-value
with '-' indicating the variable does not exist in that config file.

I still don't understand how this can result in soft IRQ time showing up
on processors that do not handle the interrupts. It might be a
HyperThreading glitch, though it shouldn't, as each logical processor
has its own APIC, and the code does not distinguish between logical and
physical processors (not at this level, anyway).

> have you tried both kernels without hyperthreading? It usually doesn't

Actually it seems to help. My experiments evolve around hardware
threads, so disabling HyperThreading is kind of counter-productive ;-)

I'll see what happens when this code is re-enabled.

I'll give it a look.

By the way, using the 2.6.25 driver under the 2.6.26 kernel does not fix
the problem, so changes to the driver code are clearly not the culprit.

I believe I have found the problem, and it has nothing to do with the driver.
Up to the latest kernel, logical processors on the same chip had sequential CPU IDs. So
CPU 0 and CPU 1 were two logical processors on the first physical one, 2 and 3 on the
second physical one, etc.
It seems that now this ordering has changed. I was running my experiments on logical
processors 0 and 2, assuming they were on different physical processors, when, in fact,
they were sharing the same one. When pinning the processes to logical processor 0 and 1, I
get at least as good a performance as I do on previous kernels.

Thanks,
Elad
