I sent this email last Friday, but received no response.

As far as I can see, some recent work in the stable
Linux kernel has broken the TCP stack, at least on my
(pretty common) hardware. Can anyone confirm that
they've seen and perhaps fixed similar symptoms, or
at least tell me what else I need to do to help them
identify the problem?

I recently upgraded my Debian system (a Dell Optiplex GX270) from a
2.6.16.11 kernel to a 2.6.30.5 one (current stable). My networking is
now misbehaving. If I could revert to an earlier kernel, I would (and
did, it worked), but now I can't because of the glibc version change;
the old kernel panics on startup. This leaves me with a *broken
computer* which I cannot use for my regular work, and cannot afford to
completely re-install.

POP, IMAP, and NNTP connect ok (multiple packets each way, viewed
using a logging proxy; no tcpdump but I can get one for you) but as
soon as a message should start coming down, the connection hangs and
then times out. I think it's the first large packet that causes this,
and I saw that the net team have been working on some features to
increase throughput through read aggregation or something... Whatever
it is, it's clearly broken (on my hardware at least).

My kernel .config file and the output of "lspci" are included below.
Thanks for any help you can give. Let me know if you need more
information.

Clifford Heath.

You could provide a tcpdump for example, and tell us which way is broken
(your machine receiving a big packet, or sending a big packet)

You might try to change /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_ecn to 0
echo 0 >/proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_ecn

You might try to change device settings

ethtool -K eth0 sg off
and various settings as well (tso, gso ...)

If you're using the Debian kernel package, please use "reportbug" to
file a bug against it.

Unfortunately I can't offer clues but *can* confirm that every kernel
since .30 has also exhibited strange networking regressions, to the point
where I had to give up even trying to understand from the changelogs who
was changing what, when, where and why and what the actual symptom is.

With .29 everything works fine; everything since .30 has trouble with
either samba or squid (both of which are the main purposes of that
particular machine). After all the initial regressions with epoll in .30 I
suspected that and built squid without epoll, but no improvement;
connecting over the network is broken (spurious connections, timeouts,
sometimes partial successes) whereas using squid from localhost (via
loopback) seems to work fine. It also seems to work fine for a friend on
.30 so the software is unlikely to be the problem.

I do have an older Intel Gbit card identified thusly:
00:0b.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82545GM Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 04)

and enabled all sorts of offloading:

$ethtool -k eth0
Offload parameters for eth0:
rx-checksumming: on
tx-checksumming: on
scatter-gather: on
tcp segmentation offload: on
udp fragmentation offload: off
generic segmentation offload: on

Maybe that is the culprit, as Eric Dumazet suspected in his mail..I will
try the latest .30 stable again without that, but in any case something is
indeed very broken in there.

So I just tried .30.5 again. Indeed the offloading seems to play a role:
with everything enabled I cannot even reliably ssh into the machine (only
"sometimes"?); however without any offloading things get "a bit better"
and squid even serves up some pages..for a while. Then it seems to hang,
swallow requests or not finish them. The tested sites reliably work for
the Windows client when it bypasses squid, as does DNS (also served from
the box). It *seems* to affect incoming traffic more than outgoing - e.g.
mail or news polling seemed to kick off and finish just fine.
Rebooting back into .29 fixes everything. Last time I tried
.31rc-something (4 IIRC) it exhibited the same problems.

I'm open to suggestions and willing to help fix this but need this machine
for actual work. :/

It seems, you and Clifford, use e1000 so it would be interesting to
find out if it matters. Does your friend with working .30 use another
card? If you can't try with another NIC, we could probably try to
revert most of the driver's changes after .29 (except maybe 3) to
check this driver only.

Clifford, if it still doesn't work for you, could you try 2.6.29?

I got the git .30.y stable tree and reverted various e1000 commits that
seemed to coincide with the various .30-rc releases but nothing helped.
Also no relation to offloads etc.

However I did notice that the "stuck squid" problem seemed to magically
fix itself after a few seconds - then hang again, fix itself after
timeouts etc. So I suspected something TCP related and BINGO!

Turns out I had both tcp_tw_recycle and tcp_tw_reuse set to 1 for reasons
I don't want to explain. :)

I can now arbitrarily fix the hanging behaviour by setting
tcp_tw_recycle to 0, and cause hangs by setting it to 1 again. For obvious
reasons this seems to affect squid more than other tasks with more long-lived
connections. What is the right behaviour? beats me.

tcp_tw_reuse does not appear to play a role, so the real culprit at least
in my case seems to be tcp_tw_recycle. In previous releases this (and
tw_reuse) was necessary for various server tasks.

Nevertheless, something has changed between .29 and .30 that "broke" the
previous behaviour. Whether this is progress or an regression I cannot
say. Maybe someone else has an idea?

Holger

Well... not yet :)

We probably can reproduce this problem with any NIC...

Could you send from the 'buggy' setup

$ grep . /proc/sys/net/ipv4/*

When you say squid is stuck, does it mean it doesnt accept new connections ?

Could help to strace it and check what it is doing ?

Yes, that seems to be the behaviour. To verify - I just browse any random
website and after a few requests the browser does not get any replies any
longer, timeouts etc. After setting tw_recycle to 0 it immediately starts
working again (and then continues to work).

Took a bit to find out in which direction things were hanging/getting
stuck, since it was not immediately clear from simply observing the client.

> Could help to strace it and check what it is doing ? --

After a quite frantic start (endless amount of 54 byte writes??) it sits
in its epoll loop and waits:

Then it again spins in the epoll loop for a while until it recovers and
starts to handle the outstanding requests (as far as I can read - it
scrolls by too quickly).

Was that somewhat helpful? I can certainly create a full trace but that's
going to be big.

Congratulations for finding the culprit!

While Eric is analyzing your data, I guess you could try reverting
some stuff around this tcp_tw_recycle, and my tcp ignorance would
point these commits for the beginning:

http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-2.6.30.y.git;a=commitdiff;h=fc1ad92dfc4e363a055053746552cdb445ba5c57

PS: you don't have to remove anybody from the Cc line on this list.;-)

While it's excellent that Holger has found his problem, the
original problem (posted by me) remains. Unfortunately the
machine affected has had a hard disk meltdown (too many
kernel builds? :-)) and so I can't continue with my testing
before I fix that. Just wanted to note that it's still a live issue.

Ilpo's cleanup (the second commit listed) looks most likely to
be a possibility.

But I surely cannot find any bugs in it, even after studying it
a few times.

Ilpo could you audit it one more time for us just in case?

I also looked through all the TCP commits in 2.6.29 to 2.6.30
and I could not find anything else that might cause stalls with
time-wait recycled connections.

Argh, not that one ...the jungle of negations. But I'll try to go it
through once more but I tell you I did go through those negations multiple
times already before submitting it :-).

What about the more than 64k connections change a9d8f9110d7e953c2f2 (or
its fixes), it might be another possibility? ...It certainly does
something related to reuse and happens to be in the correct time frame...
(I've added Evgeniy).

First condition is * -1 to switch subtraction terms around (and reverses
inequality). The other condition is very much the same. In addition, it
has an extra negation round but still OK.

I scratched my head to reproduce the conditions of hang but failed.

I am pretty sure both commits are OK (yours and mine), maybe a brute force
git bisection is needed.

So I've been studying this one quite a bit.

This change could only cause problems in timewait recycling if it:

1) Would accept using a bind bucket that previously it would not

2) Caused socket corruption due to bad locking

And I can find neither problem with the Evgeniy's bind changes.

So we've back to square one I think.

Wasn't solution found for this problem, I recall related discussion
recently, or should I dig deeper into this one?

Nothing that I know off (but that's not too reassuring I'd say). IIRC,
there were two independent problems same looking problems and one of them
turned out to be related to something else while the other problem
withstands but that guy's hw broke so the test case will no longer be
available or something like that.
