Hello,
Just a simple question. I am a student, have an idea of ethernet driver but vmware/virtualization illiterate.
1)Is vmxnet opensource. Where can I find its source.
2)Once vmxnet is in linux kernel, what changes we need to implement in
physical ethernet driver on host to make it work with vmxnet OR "any
other virtualization".
3) Any other info will be appreciated.
Sorry for any semantic errors.
Regards
MichaelC.

The vmxnet driver is labeled Vmware Confidential. I got its source by
looking in the VmwareTools tgz. It's not open source so basically game
over. Why not try KVM or Xen?

VMWare, Xen, and KVM all have different interfaces for paravirtualized
net and block drivers.

Google "virtio".

There is an open source version of it under the GPL as part of the
"Open Virtual Machine Tools", available through
http://open-vm-tools.sourceforge.net/
git.opensource.vmware.com/opensource/open-vm-tools/
