This is a small set of fixes which I believe should be backported for
the lantiq_gswip driver. Daniel Golle asked me to submit them here:
https://lore.kernel.org/netdev/aLiDfrXUbw1O5Vdi@pidgin.makrotopia.org/

As mentioned there, a merge conflict with net-next is expected, due to
the movement of the driver to the 'drivers/net/dsa/lantiq' folder there.
Good luck :-/

Patch 2/2 fixes an old regression and is the minimal fix for that, as
discussed here:
https://lore.kernel.org/netdev/aJfNMLNoi1VOsPrN@pidgin.makrotopia.org/

Patch 1/2 was identified by me through static analysis, and I consider
it to be a serious deficiency. It needs a test tag.

A port added to a "single port bridge" operates as standalone, and this
is mutually exclusive to being part of a Linux bridge. In fact,
gswip_port_bridge_join() calls gswip_add_single_port_br() with
add=false, i.e. removes the port from the "single port bridge" to enable
autonomous forwarding.

The blamed commit seems to have incorrectly thought that ds->ops->port_enable()
is called one time per port, during the setup phase of the switch.

However, it is actually called during the ndo_open() implementation of
DSA user ports, which is to say that this sequence of events:

1. ip link set swp0 down
2. ip link add br0 type bridge
3. ip link set swp0 master br0
4. ip link set swp0 up

would cause swp0 to join back the "single port bridge" which step 3 had
just removed it from.

The correct DSA hook for one-time actions per port at switch init time
is ds->ops->port_setup(). This is what seems to match the coder's
intention; also see the comment at the beginning of the file:

 * At the initialization the driver allocates one bridge table entry for
   ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 * each switch port which is used when the port is used without an
 * explicit bridge.
The blamed commit and others in that patch set started the trend
of reusing existing DSA driver API for a new purpose: calling
ds->ops->port_fdb_add() on the CPU port.
The lantiq_gswip driver was not prepared to handle that, as can be seen
from the many errors that Daniel presents in the logs:
[  174.050000] gswip 1e108000.switch: port 2 failed to add fa:aa:72:f4:8b:1e vid 1 to fdb: -22
[  174.060000] gswip 1e108000.switch lan2: entered promiscuous mode
[  174.070000] gswip 1e108000.switch: port 2 failed to add 00:01:02:03:04:02 vid 0 to fdb: -22
[  174.090000] gswip 1e108000.switch: port 2 failed to add 00:01:02:03:04:02 vid 1 to fdb: -22
[  174.090000] gswip 1e108000.switch: port 2 failed to delete fa:aa:72:f4:8b:1e vid 1 from fdb: -2
The errors are because gswip_port_fdb() wants to get a handle to the
bridge that originated these FDB events, to associate it with a FID.
Absolutely honourable purpose, however this only works for user ports.
To get the bridge that generated an FDB entry for the CPU port, one
would need to look at the db.bridge.dev argument. But this was
introduced in commit c26933639b54 ("net: dsa: request drivers to perform
FDB isolation"), first appeared in v5.18, and when the blamed commit was
introduced in v5.14, no such API existed.
So the core DSA feature was introduced way too soon for lantiq_gswip.
Not acting on these host FDB entries and suppressing any errors has no
other negative effect, and practically returns us to not supporting the
host filtering feature at all - peacefully, this time.
Fixes: 10fae4ac89ce ("net: dsa: include bridge addresses which are local in the host fdb list")
Daniel, can we count on your for that?
Hi Vladimir,
Hi Jakub,
sorry for the late reply.
I got both patches in my testing tree for long time and can confirm that
both are fixing real issues.
I have now built the 'net' tree with only the two patches on top, and run
local_termination.sh for basic testing before and after. I've attached the
results of both test runs, before and after applying both patches.
Consider the whole series
I hope we can proceed with the other important fixes Vladimir has pulled
out of his slieve[1], however, I agree that not all of them should go via
the 'net' tree, and I suppose (speaking for all of OpenWrt, which is the
main user when it comes to devices with Lantiq SoC containing those
switches) that going via net-next is fine -- we can still backport
individual commits, or even all of them, and apply them on OpenWrt's
current Linux 6.12 kernel sources.
Thank you for testing.
I have two comments to make:
- I don't think your local_termination.sh exercises the bug fixed by
  patch "[1/2] net: dsa: lantiq_gswip: move gswip_add_single_port_br()
  call to port_setup()". The port has to be initially down before
  joining a bridge, and be brought up afterwards. This can be tested
  manually. In local_termination.sh, although bridge_create() runs
  "ip link set $h2 up" after "ip link set $h2 master br0", $h2 was
  already up due to "simple_if_init $h2".
- If the vast majority of users make use of this driver through OpenWrt,
  and if backporting to the required trees is done by OpenWrt and the
  fixes' presence in linux-stable is not useful, I can offer to resend
  this set plus the remaining patches all together through the net-next
  tree, and avoid complications such as merge conflicts.
FWIW I don't even see a real conflict when merging this. git seems to
be figuring things out on its own.
I've added printk statements to illustrate the function calls to
gswip_port_enable() and gswip_port_setup(), and tested both the current
'net' without (before.txt) and with (after.txt) patch
"net: dsa: lantiq_gswip: move gswip_add_single_port_br() call to port_setup()"
applied. This makes it obvious that gswip_port_enable() calls
gswip_add_single_port_br() even though the port is at this point
already a member of another bridge.
I'm ready to do more testing or spray for printk over it, just let me
know.
My concern here was the upcoming merge of the 'net' tree with the
'net-next' tree which now already contains the splitting of the driver
into .h and .c file, and moved both into a dedicated folder.
This may result in needing (trivial) manual intervention.
It would be great if all of Vladimir's patches can be merged without
a long delay, so more patches adding support for newer hardware can
be added during the next merge window. Especially the conversion of
the open-coded register access functions to be replaced by regmap_*
calls should only be committed after Vladimir's fixes.
Out of sheer ignorance is not clear to me why gswip_port_enable() is
apparently invoked only once while gswip_port_setup() is apparently
invoked for each dsa port.
AFAICT, when Jakub wrote 'merging this' he referred exactly to the 'net'
-> 'net-next' merge.
This should not be a problem. Even moving these patches to net-next,
they could be applied before the upcoming net-next PR (if Vladimir
repost them soon enough). Even in the worst case scenario - targeting
net-next and missing this PR - there should not be any delay for
follow-up patches, as such patches will likely have to wait for the
merge window closure anyway.
Given the above, that we are very close to 6.17, and the fixed here is
quite old, I suggest moving this series to net-next - unless someone
comes with a good reasoning to do otherwise. @Vladimr, could you please
re-post for net-next?
Thanks!
Paolo
All ports have to be set up during probing, but only the ports in use
(in the "after" log, these are the CPU port and one user port) need to
be enabled. The user port has a netdev, so it is enabled on ndo_open().
The CPU port doesn't have a netdev, it is always enabled.
So since I got my testing results which I'm now satisfied with, they
don't actually need reposting. If you can pick them up for the "net"
pull request and they're merged back into "net-next" later today, it
should be even better than reposting them for "net-next" - which may
require some avoidable rework such as dropping the "Fixes" tags.
I can repost them to "net-next" as well, along with more patches that
are waiting for these to be merged, but this isn't my preferred route
today, as it no longer seems to be the simplest path.
Understood, thanks!
Side note; generally speaking it's not needed to scrub the fixes tag
when reposting patches for net-next: we can have fixes landing to
net-next (i.e. invasive ones) and we need the correct Fixes: tag there,
as stable teams will still (try to/want to) pick them up at due time.
Some times the fixes tag is removed on net-next repost because it's
agreed that the change in question is more a refactor/improvement than a
fix.
I think patch 1/2 here belongs more to the first category above than the
second.
In any case, given there is consensous for this landing on 'net' I'll
pick it.
Paolo
Hello:
This series was applied to netdev/net.git (main)
