The discussion with Eric W. Biederman reveals that the concept for
__net_initdata is bogus. The ->exit method of pernet_operations
should be called during module exit.

So, discard this attribute.

Returning back to this, since block based storage, which can act as a
shared storage/transport layer, is ready with 5'th release of the DST.

This looks like a good way to work with offline clients (where I recall
Coda), after offline node modified data, it should be merged back to the
cluster with different algorithms.

Data (supposed to be) written to the failed node during its offline time
will be resynced from other nodes when failed one is online, there are
no problems and/or special algorithms to be used here.

Filesystem replication is not a 100% 'git way' - git tree contains
already combined objects - i.e. the last blob for given path does not
contain its history, only ready to be used data, while filesystem,
especially that one which requires simultaneous write from different
threads/nodes, should implement copy-on-write semantics, essentially
putting all new data (git commit) to the new location and then collect
it from different extents to present a ready file.

At least that is how I see the filesystem I'm working on.

Git semantics and copy-on-write has actually quite a lot in common (on
high enough level of abstraction), but SHA1 index is not a possible 
issue in filesystem - even besides amount of data to be hashed before
key is ready. Key should also contain enough information about what
underlying data is - git does not store that information (tree, blob or
whatever) in its keys, since it does not require it. At least that is
how I see it to be implemented.

Overall I see this new project as a true copy-on-write FS.

I wanted to apply this, but in validing the patch I noticed
what appears to be an omission in TCP ipv6.

It seems that NET_DMA support there is only half-cooked and
the following patch is needed (and thus there is a modular
use of softnet_data again).

Looking at Christopher Leech's original TCP I/O AT commit:

1a2449a87bb7606113b1aa1a9d3c3e78ef189a1c

this appears to just be an oversight.

If one of the current I/O AT folks can look this over and
confirm I'd appreciate it.

- if the file is a part of the kernel, __exit (and pernet_unregister)
  will never called and should be dropped
- if the file is a part of a module, __init is NOT dropped on the
  module loading stage

I think the correct thing to do for now is to simply remove these
__net_* markers and their definitions.  There are so many tricky cases
that it is easier to just get rid of them.

Could someone send me a patch which does that?

The attached patch revert Pavel's orginal patch from 2.6.23-mm1. 
It should work fine with net-2.6 too.

This patch reverts the patch sent by Pavel Emilyanov
that introduced __net_init/__net_exit/__net_initdata defines
to save some memory when CONFIG_NET_NS=n.

When CONFIG_NET_NS=n, this later patch causes an oops when a 
netns-aware module is loaded after boot. When initialized the 
module tries to register its pernet operations and add them in 
the pernet_list. Unfortunately this list is corrupted as its 
first entries have been freed at the end of the boot sequence.

Thanks for the info. but....
Due to the "don't access the hardware, while powered-off" rule, I must know that the timer isn't running.
and won't be.
So what function to use (if possible) to be sure that the timer won't run anymore?
(Taking in the account the fact that it re-enables itself)

Hi Dave,

This is the 5th version of our interface group patches.

The first patch is a fix in the rtnl socket interface.

An u_int32_t member was added to net devices indicating the interface
group number of the device which can be get/set via netlink.

The xt_ifgroup netfilter match is for checking this value with an
optional mask.

Other patches are for userpace programs:
 * iptables
 
 * iproute2. Because kernel 2.6.24-rc1 introduced a new enum value,
   IFLA_NET_NS_PID, and it wasn't in the iproute2 code, the first
   patch simply adds this value. The second patch adds support of
   interface group.

Usage:
 ip link set eth0 group 4    # set
 ip link set eth0 group 0    # unset
 iptables -A INPUT -m ifgroup --ifgroup-in 4/0xf -j ACCEPT
 iptables -A FORWARD -m ifgroup --ifgroup-in 4  ! --ifgroup-out 5 -j DROP
