* [PATCH v6 0/8] SUNRPC: make rpcbind clients allocated and destroyed dynamically
From: Stanislav Kinsbursky @ 2011-10-25 11:15 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: Trond.Myklebust
Cc: linux-nfs, xemul, neilb, netdev, linux-kernel, bfields, davem,
devel
This patch-set was created in context of clone of git branch:
git://git.linux-nfs.org/projects/trondmy/nfs-2.6.git
and rebased on tag "v3.1".
2 Trond:
Nothing changed against previous patch-set we discussed already.
If no other issues will appear against it, hoping for soon commit.
If git repo, mentioned above, is not suitable for development purposes, please,
reply with the right one.
v6:
1) Fixes in rpcb_clients management.
v4:
1) creation and destruction on rpcbind clients now depends on service program
versions "vs_hidden" flag.
This patch is required for further RPC layer virtualization, because rpcbind
clients have to be per network namespace.
To achive this, we have to untie network namespace from rpcbind clients sockets.
The idea of this patch set is to make rpcbind clients non-static. I.e. rpcbind
clients will be created during first RPC service creation, and destroyed when
last RPC service is stopped.
With this patch set rpcbind clients can be virtualized easely.
The following series consists of:

SUNRPC: introduce helpers for reference counted rpcbind clients
SUNRPC: use rpcbind reference counting helpers

v6:
1) added write memory barrier to rpcb_set_local to make sure, that rpcbind
clients become valid before rpcb_users assignment
2) explicitly set rpcb_users to 1 instead of incrementing it (looks clearer from
my pow).
v5: fixed races with rpcb_users in rpcb_get_local()
This helpers will be used for dynamical creation and destruction of rpcbind
clients.
Variable rpcb_users is actually a counter of lauched RPC services. If rpcbind
clients has been created already, then we just increase rpcb_users.

New function ("svc_uses_rpcbind") will be used to detect, that new service will
send portmapper register calls. For such services we will create rpcbind
clients and remove all stale portmap registrations.
Also, svc_rpcb_cleanup() will be set as sv_shutdown callback for such services
in case of this field wasn't initialized earlier. This will allow to destroy
rpcbind clients when no other users of them left.
Note: Currently, any creating service will be detected as portmap user.
Probably, this is wrong. But now it depends on program versions "vs_hidden"
flag.

Sadly, it doesn't work with files that aren't moved, but are split
into lots of files. So I got a conflict on the drivers/net/Kconfig
file due to the file being moved to tons of different locations. But
the change was pretty trivial, so I think I got that trivially right
too.
> I'll also note that I had to bump GIT's diff.renamelimit to about 1000

Yeah. You can probably just set it to zero to disable the limiting
entirely. The reason for the rename limit is for crazy use cases on
smaller machines than you'll probably ever use. So the git default
values tend to try to be safe for people who have smaller machines.
> I think that, without the driver renames, this is actually a smaller

This had an annoying conflict with some of the driver base changes. It
was made doubly annoying by the fact that Greg seems to use some
seriously bad drugs, and creates totally crap commit messages that are
just annoying when you have to look at them because there's some
conflict.
Greg - please fix your crazy tools. Look at this:
git log fs/sysfs/dir.c
and tell me why the f*&% you have commit messages like this:
commit 4f72c0cab40536a0be501d85ea4918467ab82ad5
Author: Mikulas Patocka <mpatocka@redhat.com>
Date: Mon Jul 25 17:55:57 2011 -0400

sysfs: use rb-tree for name lookups

and there's a *lot* of them. That duplication of the header line is
useless. It is *doubly* useless to then have a "body" of the commit
that just says the same thing *again*. Christ!
EVERY SINGLE COMMIT from Mikulas has that problem. WHY?
So stop duplicating the header line! And make the body of the commit
actually tell us something *useful*.
Anyway, after that rant about really bad practices, let me say that I
did fix up the conflict and I think it's right. But I won't guarantee
it, so please check the changes to fs/sysfs/dir.c.
I added Mikulas, Greg and Eric Biederman to the email, because those
three people seem to be the ones that caused the conflicts in that
file. Please do check out my conflict resolution.

OK I've reviewed all the users of needed_headroom and I haven't
found anything other than the cases that we have enumerated.
One thing I noticed is that the macro LL_ALLOCATED_SPACE is
completely bogus and buggy. It applies the alignment to the
sum of headroom and tailroom. However, the alignment is then
applied separately to the headroom when reserving, meaning that
we may end up with insufficient tailroom.
So I'm going to get rid of LL_ALLOCATED_SPACE completely and
replace it with explicit references to the tailroom as it doesn't
need the alignment anyway (The headroom needs alignment since
we use it to ensure the head is aligned).
Cheers,

The "crazy" tool was using 'git am'. The problem was that I missed the
fact that the first line of the patch sent to me duplicated the subject
line. It's a really common problem when people generate patches and
send them off by email, I just forgot to edit the patches from Mikulas
to remove them, my fault, sorry.

Ok, please (a) check these things before applying patches, and (b)
COMPLAIN TO EVERY SOURCE THAT SENDS YOU CRAP.
The push-back so that it doesn't happen again is important.
In other words: Mikulas - whatever tool you're using, stop using it,
or start using it correctly. Duplicating the header line in the body
of the email is crap and wrong. If you want to duplicate it in the
email, add the "Subject:" prefix to it (same goes for "Date:" and
particularly "From:" - those fields are actually destroyed by
forwarding the patches over email - unlike the subject line)

Manually merged changes from commits afc4b13df143, bf3f1a6081aa and 5d6bcdfe38ce into et131x.c as identified in email below.
Also removed dependency on NETDEV_1000 in Kconfig, which no longer exists.
Greg: This patch should also be good for the staging tree.

Subject: linux-next: manual merge of the staging tree with the net-next tree
Hi Greg,
Today's linux-next merge of the staging tree got a conflict in
drivers/staging/et131x/et1310_tx.c drivers/staging/et131x/et131x_netdev.c
between commits afc4b13df143 ("net: remove use of ndo_set_multicast_list
in drivers"), bf3f1a6081aa ("et131x: convert to SKB paged frag API") and
5d6bcdfe38ce ("net: use DMA_x_DEVICE and dma_mapping_error with
skb_frag_dma_map") from the net-next tree and commit d2796743cba2
("staging: et131x: Put all .c files into one big file") from the staging
tree.
The latter removed these files, so I did that but more fixup is proably
needed.

Nope, the most visible thing are some new annoying warnings, that seem
absolutely broken.
At the very minimum, that WARN_ON(1) should be a WARN_ON_ONCE() or
something like that. Because showing it over an dover again is not
helpful.
Added the people who signed off on the changes to the affected files,
since they hopefully know why this happens and can fix it..

Something is holding socket lock and it was acquired in sk_clone()
which does bh_lock_sock() and returns with the lock held, though I got
completely lost in the gazillions of possible callchains ...
While staring at it I found an missing unlock in sk_clone() itself,
but that's not the one which causes the leak. Lockdep would have
complained about that separately :)

The empty 'return' at the end of a void function: it is 100%
redundant...

* [patch net-next V5] net: introduce ethernet teaming device
From: Jiri Pirko @ 2011-10-25 13:03 UTC (permalink / raw)

This patch introduces new network device called team. It supposes to be
very fast, simple, userspace-driven alternative to existing bonding
driver.
Userspace library called libteam with couple of demo apps is available
here:
https://github.com/jpirko/libteam
Note it's still in its dipers atm.
team<->libteam use generic netlink for communication. That and rtnl
suppose to be the only way to configure team device, no sysfs etc.
Python binding basis for libteam was recently introduced (some need
still need to be done on it though). Daemon providing arpmon/miimon
active-backup functionality will be introduced shortly.
All what's necessary is already implemented in kernel team driver.
Signed-off-by: Jiri Pirko <jpirko@redhat.com>
v4->v5:
- team_change_mtu() uses team->lock while travesing though port
list
- mac address changes are moved completely to jurisdiction of
userspace daemon. This way the daemon can do FOM1, FOM2 and
possibly other weird things with mac addresses.
Only round-robin mode sets up all ports to bond's address then
enslaved.
- Extended Kconfig text
v3->v4:
- remove redundant synchronize_rcu from __team_change_mode()
- revert "set and clear of mode_ops happens per pointer, not per
byte"
- extend comment of function __team_change_mode()
v2->v3:
- team_change_mtu() uses rcu version of list traversal to unwind
- set and clear of mode_ops happens per pointer, not per byte
- port hashlist changed to be embedded into team structure
- error branch in team_port_enter() does cleanup now
- fixed rtln->rtnl
v1->v2:
- modes are made as modules. Makes team more modular and
extendable.
- several commenters' nitpicks found on v1 were fixed
- several other bugs were fixed.
- note I ignored Eric's comment about roundrobin port selector
as Eric's way may be easily implemented as another mode (mode
"random") in future.

I tripped on it few times and never understood why we
were fixing the priority at this point.

Duh. I was thinking about that when doing the merge, but then never
did the fixups. My bad.
Thanks, applied,

I think it looks ok, I've booted the merge result, and am typing and
sending this from the new kernel, and it hasn't crashed yet :)

Please keep the modes separated. Security and embedded folks will
thank you. If you are concerned with the overhead which still should
be small and doesn't impact performance, you can compile as built-in.
The good thing is that you can choose the best option for you while
doing the opposite doesn't offer that.
Also, if in the future we need to add module parameters, the namespace
is clean.
I would ask to keep it as the work is done already.
