Definitely not. Supporting linux device drivers essentially requires
some mechanism like this. We could use anything (SHA1, Mayan Calendar,
etc). This driver happens to use a ISO-like date code.

Upstream drivers are routinely back ported to distro releases. Version
is the primary means for a vendor (like ASIX) to determine what was
back ported. Distro maintainers and 1st tier support organizations
also need to track versions and "ethtool -i" is the canonical way to
look this up on a running system.

* [PATCH v5 9/9] net: remove NETIF_F_NO_CSUM feature bit
From: Michał Mirosław @ 2011-11-16 1:29 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: netdev; +Cc: David S. Miller, Ben Hutchings
In-Reply-To: <cover.1321404954.git.mirq-linux@rere.qmqm.pl>

Only distinct use is checking if NETIF_F_NOCACHE_COPY should be
enabled by default. The check heuristics is altered a bit here,
so it hits other people than before. The default shouldn't be
trusted for performance-critical cases anyway.

For all other uses NETIF_F_NO_CSUM is equivalent to NETIF_F_HW_CSUM.

* [PATCH v5 5/9] net: Define enum for net device features.
From: Michał Mirosław @ 2011-11-16 1:29 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: netdev; +Cc: David S. Miller, Ben Hutchings
In-Reply-To: <cover.1321404954.git.mirq-linux@rere.qmqm.pl>

Define feature values by bit position instead of direct 2**i values
and force the values to be of type netdev_features_t.

Cleaned and extended from patch by Mahesh Bandewar <maheshb@google.com>:
+ added netdev_features_t casts
+ included bits under NETIF_F_GSO_MASK
+ moved feature #defines out of struct net_device definition

* [PATCH v5 0/9] Cleanup and extension of netdev features
From: Michał Mirosław @ 2011-11-16 1:29 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: netdev

Commit fd38f734 (igbvf: convert to ndo_fix_features) removed last use
of old ethtool ops for controlling netdevice's features. This series
finishes the cleanup and extends feature pool to 64 bits.

Also, there's additional patch that removes NETIF_F_NO_CSUM as it is
now, and has been for some time, equivalent to NETIF_F_HW_CSUM.

To see the new features in action, you need ethtool patched with:

http://patchwork.ozlabs.org/patch/96374/

Not much has changed in those patches compared to the version I posted
in June. v4->v5 is a rebase to current net-next.

Only compile tested. Kernels newer than 3.1-rcSomething don't boot for
me because of some block layer or dm-crypt issue I don't have time to
debug now. :-(

Best Regards,
Michał Mirosław

* [PATCH v5 1/9] net: remove legacy ethtool ops
From: Michał Mirosław @ 2011-11-16 1:29 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: netdev; +Cc: David S. Miller, Ben Hutchings
In-Reply-To: <cover.1321404954.git.mirq-linux@rere.qmqm.pl>

As all drivers are converted, we may now remove discrete offload setting
callback handling.

* [PATCH v5 4/9] net: introduce and use netdev_features_t for device features sets
From: Michał Mirosław @ 2011-11-16 1:29 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: netdev; +Cc: David S. Miller, Ben Hutchings
In-Reply-To: <cover.1321404954.git.mirq-linux@rere.qmqm.pl>

v2:	add couple missing conversions in drivers
	split unexporting netdev_fix_features()
	implemented %pNF
	convert sock::sk_route_(no?)caps

* [PATCH v5 3/9] net: split netdev features to separate header
From: Michał Mirosław @ 2011-11-16 1:29 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: netdev; +Cc: David S. Miller, Ben Hutchings
In-Reply-To: <cover.1321404954.git.mirq-linux@rere.qmqm.pl>

Move features definitions to separate header so that linux/skbuff.h won't
need to include linux/netdevice.h after netdev_features_t is introduced.

* [PATCH v5 2/9] net: ethtool: break association of ETH_FLAG_* with NETIF_F_*
From: Michał Mirosław @ 2011-11-16 1:29 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: netdev; +Cc: David S. Miller, Ben Hutchings
In-Reply-To: <cover.1321404954.git.mirq-linux@rere.qmqm.pl>

This is the only place left where dev->features are directly
exposed to userspace.

I know checkpatch.pl complains about __ethtool_{get,set}_flags(), but
the code is easier to read this way.

Can't you do this by setting up the compile environment better?
I would rather have the tools work with all features and handle
errors from kernel rather than neutering it.

* [PATCH net-next] sweep-up some straglers in strlcpy conversion of .get_drvinfo routines
From: Rick Jones @ 2011-11-16 0:59 UTC (permalink / raw)

From: Rick Jones <rick.jones2@hp.com>

Convert some remaining straglers' .get_drvinfo routines to use strlcpy
rather than strcpy/strncpy.

Compile tested only. This leaves drivers/net/wireless (there was a patch
sent to linux-wireless) and drivers/net/usb, along with anything that
does not get compiled for an amd_64 flavor kernel.

* [RFC] iproute:  Support cross-compiling.
From: greearb @ 2011-11-16  1:04 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: netdev; +Cc: Ben Greear

From: Ben Greear <greearb@candelatech.com>

This lets users use their own compiler instead of
hard-coding to use gcc.

Also adds tests to disable some things that were not supported
in my ARM cross-compile toolchain.

* [PATCH] pch_gbe: Move #include of module.h

The first #include must be pch_gbe.h as it
does a #define of pr_fmt.

Dave,
Thanks for applying the series and offering to push immediately to
linus. I'll submit the white space/coding style clean ups after the
frustration of my blooper has receded from your memory a bit more. :)
