"Reorder the ... order" sounds a bit tautological. :-)

Hi Dave,

This is my first pull request for net-next, and it seems a bit
bigger than the past few releases. Detailed information below,
as usual.

Please pull and let me know if there's any problem.

Thanks,

  cfg80211: Fix documentation for connect result (2017-01-13 09:47:08 +0100)

----------------------------------------------------------------
For 4.11, we seem to have more than in the past few releases:
 * socket owner support for connections, so when the wifi
manager (e.g. wpa_supplicant) is killed, connections are
torn down - wpa_supplicant is critical to managing certain
operations, and can opt in to this where applicable
 * minstrel & minstrel_ht updates to be more efficient (time and space)
 * set wifi_acked/wifi_acked_valid for skb->destructor use in the
kernel, which was already available to userspace
 * don't indicate new mesh peers that might be used if there's no
   room to add them
 * multicast-to-unicast support in mac80211, for better medium usage
(since unicast frames can use *much* higher rates, by ~3 orders of
   magnitude)
 * add API to read channel (frequency) limitations from DT
 * add infrastructure to allow randomizing public action frames for
MAC address privacy (still requires driver support)
 * many cleanups and small improvements/fixes across the board

There is code in netback_remove which eventually calls xenvif_free to
free up the resources, maybe you should modify xenvif_free instead? That
seems more symmetric to me. What do you think?

Good catch, this is definitely needed. And it would probably be in a
separate patch.

* [PATCH v3 0/8] uapi: export all headers under uapi directories

In-Reply-To: <3131144.4Ej3KFWRbz@wuerfel>

Here is the v3 of this series. The first 5 patches are just cleanup: some
exported headers were still under a non-uapi directory or (x86 case) were
wrongly exported.
The patch 6 was spotted by code review: there is no in-tree user of this
functionality.
Patches 7 and 8 remove the need to list explicitly headers. Now all files
under an uapi directory are exported.

This series has been tested with a 'make headers_install' on x86 and a
'make headers_install_all'. I've checked the result of both commands.

This patch is built against linus tree. If I must rebase it against the kbuild
tree, just tell me ;-)

v2 -> v3:
 - patch #1: remove arch/arm/include/asm/types.h
 - patch #2: remove arch/h8300/include/asm/bitsperlong.h
 - patch #3: remove arch/nios2/include/uapi/asm/setup.h
 - patch #4: don't export msr-index.h
 - patch #5: fix a typo: s/unput-files3-name/input-files3-name
 - patch #6: no change
 - patch #7: fix include/uapi/asm-generic/Kbuild.asm by introducing mandatory-y
 - add patch #8

v1 -> v2:
 - add patch #1 to #6
 - patch #7: remove use of header-y

Comments are welcomed,
Nicolas

to asm-generic/setup.h.

After the last four patches, all exported headers are under uapi/, thus
input-files2 are not needed anymore.
The side effect is that input-files1-name is exactly header-y.

Note also that input-files3-name is genhdr-y.

for exported headers") but never used in-tree.

Regularly, when a new header is created in include/uapi/, the developer
forgets to add it in the corresponding Kbuild file. This error is usually
detected after the release is out.

In fact, all headers under uapi directories should be exported, thus it's
useless to have an exhaustive list.

After this patch, the following files, which were not exported, are now

Thanks to Julien Floret <julien.floret@6wind.com> for the tip to get all

For the record, note that exported files for asm directories are a mix of
files listed by:
 - include/uapi/asm-generic/Kbuild.asm;
 - arch/<arch>/include/uapi/asm/Kbuild;
 - arch/<arch>/include/asm/Kbuild.

* [PATCH v3 8/8] uapi: export all arch specifics directories

In-Reply-To: <1484304406-10820-1-git-send-email-nicolas.dichtel@6wind.com>

This patch removes the need of subdir-y. Now all files/directories under
arch/<arch>/include/uapi/ are exported.

The only change for userland is the layout of the command 'make
headers_install_all': directories asm-<arch> are replaced by arch-<arch>/.
Those new directories contains all files/directories of the specified arch.

Note that only cris and tile have more directories than only asm:
 - arch-v[10|32] for cris;
 - arch for tile.

The connect code vallocs the queue array because the size is not known until then so it makes sense that disconnect vfrees it.

Maybe device_find_child() needs changing to take 'const void *' ?

I suggest we also need to have this spinlock acquired in another part
of cleaning code (xenvif_free). The reason to introduce it is a locking
practice in openvswitch when they don't grab any network subsystem locks
(rtnl_lock) in order to gather the statistics. I'm not sure that it's
correct behavior. Anyone can advise?

Yes, Synopsys now has the strategy to contribute and help in mainline kernel
development. My main responsibility is to work in the mainline allocating 99% of
my time to it. I am focused on mainly in PCI and Ethernet.

Your suggestions make perfectly sense you in case we are not able to make the
simple change I suggest bellow.

In one of the last e-mails I suggested a different approach. We should just name
stmicro to dwc and keep stmmac. This way in the future we can have new Ethernet
IPs being deployed in this dwc folder like:

net/ethernet/dwc/
  stmmac/
xxxmac/ (new Dwc Ethernet IP 1)
yyymac/ (new Dwc Ethernet IP 2)
etc..

Although is a small change, it will mean a lot in the future, because it can
have centralized and it won't erase the history of the stmmac driver.

Understand your point. Change is always a challenge, but if done in time, it
will save headaches in the future. Synopsys is going to increase the Ethnert IP
portfolio along the years and we are going to face dificulties in make it
organized, and avoid the creation of little islands.

I can give you the example of the NVMe driver. If not mistaken in kernel 4.4 the
NVMe was completely reworked: It was removed from scsi (where it was a simple
nvme driver) and a kind of subsystem was created. This was done for the future
to include future host and device drivers for NVMe.

Currently the PCI subsystem is re-organizing pci/host, moving files around and
creating folders to organize code better. This is being done to include future
root complex and endpoint drivers, having a clean code organization.

I volunteer to help in backports and that kind of operations, because like I
explained before, it my job, to help in mainline development.

Thanks,
Joao

Dave,

I am not sure, if the stopped chip support of vendors is something
equivalent to the removal of OSN-CHPID support for s390. Probably
I used misleading terms like "OSN-device" in my patch description:

The standard networking card on s390 is called
"Open Systems Adapter-Express card" (shortly "OSA-card"), and for sure
the qeth driver continues to support it in general. Besides covering
traditional Ethernet traffic, an OSA-card can also be used for very
IBM-specific purposes.
The mode an OSA-card is running is configured outside of Linux in
the mainframe hardware configuration. Linux supports a subset of
these modes with the qeth and lcs drivers.

One very specific OSA-mode is the OSN-mode. This mode is one building
block for a Linux-assisted approach that allows
existing IBM mainframe operating systems to continue to run
IBM Systems Network Architecture (SNA) protocol programs.
Just these SNA related code parts in qeth would be removed with
this patch.

Do you still think it is important to keep code just needed for
IBM SNA traffic in the kernel?
Token Ring support for instance has been removed in 2012. Isn't this
something comparable to my intended removal of OSN-mode support in qeth?

In other words: Would it make sense to resend my patch with a better
description?

Kind regards, Ursula

I thought the above may be better as it seems to me that only descriptors
in the range described above could need to be freed. But simpler may be
better. And I also noticed several other problems with the code I posted

Ah, nevermind - it's actually the netdev's parent which should have the
bus type set. At first I assumed this would be a PCI specific thing.
