* [PATCH net] tuntap: fix use after free during release

After commit b196d88aba8a ("tun: fix use after free for ptr_ring") we
need clean up tx ring during release(). But unfortunately, it tries to
do the cleanup blindly after socket were destroyed which will lead
another use-after-free. Fix this by doing the cleanup before dropping
the last reference of the socket in __tun_detach().

I do not actually need fixed-link but I agree with Florian that it is much
better to have that option. I see it a as way to override defaults that
do not work for the user. That is what I was hoping for but it did not work.

So as the fixed-link subnode is optional we still should force some sensible
defaults if it is not used. Same as Marvell drives does. Can I say that we
agreed that the current CPU port setting is not correct and the fastest link
speed and duplex supported by the chip should be set as a default?

To the compatibility of the driver with the QCA8334 that I use. I am not sure
what should be the correct way to deal with that. For example Marvell binding
uses only two compatible strings for a large range of chips in one family.
While Broadcom has one compatible string for each chip. As I mentioned earlier
in this thread the QCA8334 switch has four ports while the already supported
QCA8337 has seven ports. That is the only difference. Register address space
is the same.

Should I:
  - add a new compatible string "qualcomm,qca8334" and update the docs,
  - or just update the documentation and describe the compatibility?

As I need to update the docs I understand it should go as a separate patch.
Is it enough to CC devicetree list with the whole series? Any other
list/maintainer?

This targets to uniformize the handling of the different GMAC versions in
stmmac_main.c file and also tune-up the HW.

Currently there are some if/else conditions in the main source file which
calls different callbacks depending on the ID of GMAC.

With the introducion of a generic HW interface handling which automatically
selects the GMAC callbacks to be used, it is now unpleasant to see if
conditions in the main code because this should be completely agnostic of the
GMAC version.

This series removes most of these conditions. There are some if conditions
that remain untouched but the callbacks handling are now uniformized.

Tested in GMAC5, hope I didn't break any previous versions.

David raised some rightfull constrains about the use of indirect callbacks in
the code. I did iperf tests with and without patches 3-12 and the performance
remained equal. I guess for 1Gb/s and because my setup has a powerfull
processor these patches don't affect the performance.

Perhaps someone using a SoC with a slow CPU could test this?

This enables OSP (Operate on Second Packet) for GMAC4. The feature
allows DMA to fetch second descriptor while its still processing the
first one.

Running iperf, the performance gain is +/- 38%.

This is cutting down performance. Once the timer is armed it should run
after the time expires for the first packet sent and not the last one.

After this change, running iperf, the performance gain is +/- 24%.

Instead of relying on the GMAC version for choosing if we need to use
dma_{rx/tx}_mode or just dma_mode callback lets uniformize this and
always use the dma_{rx/tx}_mode callbacks.

Yes, but desc is a pointer to descriptor ring I think so 
vring_unmap_one_packed() still depends on the content of descriptor ring?

With the introducion of callbacks check in hwif.h we only call the
callback if HW supports it so there is no longer need to check for GMAC

PTP and MMC modules base address can depend on the GMAC version. As this
is HW specific lets move this base address calculation to hwif.c. Also,
add an entry in the HW table so that we can specify the module offset.
This can later be extended to more modules, if deemed necessary.

Instead of relying on the GMAC version for choosing if we need to use
dma_init or dma_init_{rx/tx}_chan callback, lets uniformize this and
always use the dma_init_{rx/tx}_chan callbacks.

While at it, fix the use of dma_init_chan callback, which shall be
called for as many channels as the max of rx/tx channels.

We either have .enable_dma_transmission or .set_tx_tail_ptr in the HW
table callbacks, we can never have both so there is no need to check for
GMAC version.

It seems that there are two cases that last_used_idx
equals to next_avail_idx. The first one is that the
ring is empty. And the second one is that the ring
is full. Although in the first case, most probably,
the driver won't enable the interrupt.

Maybe I really should track the used_wrap_counter
instead of calculating it each time I need it.. I'll
give it a try..

Hi Hirotaka

I assume you add the 192.168.11.1 and 192.168.12.1 to the interfaces
using global scope? Global scope means the IP addresses are valid
everywhere. All routers should know how to route packets to these IP
addresses. So a host is free to pick any of its global scope IP
addresses and use them. The outgoing interface should not matter,
since all routers downstream of it should have routes for the global
scope IP addresses.

It sounds like your router is doing reverse path filtering. It is
checking its routing table for the source address, and throwing the
packets away if they don't come in the interface the route points out
of. If you don't trust your network, this makes sense. It helps to
stop a host spoofing another host, by sending packets with a spoofed
IP address. But you probably want to do reverse path filtering on the
gateway which borders between the networks you do trust and those you
don't.

The present TX workrequest(FW_ETH_TX_PKT_WR) cant be used for
host->vf communication, since it doesn't loopback the outgoing
packets to virtual interfaces on the same port. This can be done using
FW_ETH_TX_PKT_VM_WR.
This fix depends on ethtool_flags to determine what WR to use for
TX path. Support for setting this flags by user is added in next commit.

Hi Alvaro

What should happen in general terms is that at some point the link to
the peer is established. phylib, the generic PHY code, polls the PHY
ever second, asking what the link state is. When the link changes from
down to up, phylib will call the link_adjust callback in the MAC, and
netif_carrier_on().

When the PHY reports the link has gone down, it does similar, calls
the adjust_link callback, and netif_carrier_off().

So what you need to do is find out why the PHY driver never reports
link up. Does the PHY even know when the link is up? Often SFF/SFP
modules have a Signal Detect pin, which is connected to a gpio. Do you
have something like that? If so, you should look at the PHYLINK code
and the SFP device which was added recently.
